Protecting rope from sharp edge (TR solo)
|
Not sure if this is the right place to post this, so sorry if it isn't. I was TR soloing a highball the other day to rehearse moves (something I am fairly new to) and I ended up tearing the sheath of the rope, most likely because I did not protect the rope from the edge of the boulder. I figured it would be fine since it was more or less a fixed line, but I failed to account for how weighting and unweighting the rope repeatedly would stretch it across the edge (not to mention swinging side to side). Do y'all have any tips about this? I know they make products for this but could I use a tarp or a rope bag? |

Yup. Whatever’s handy. Backpack for example. Use a prussik on the rope clipped to the object to keep it from slipping around or falling off. |

I've used a section of old hose to protect over edges before. Slit it lengthwise and poke a hole in one end for a piece of string. I know some folks also use carpet samples. |

Rope tarp, hoodie, whatever will work fine but if you trs enough then at some point you should just spend the $20 on a rope protector. They roll up real small and mine get used a lot and they're more convenient to use than whatever bodge job you come up with. So if you occasionally TRS I probably wouldn't bother, but if you're putting lots of holes in your rope tarp or whatever then just upgrade to the real thing. |

What I use is the best cheapest and longest lasting option. Go to a low cost store like Kmart and buy two MTB inner tubes. Cut to the desired length. They are super tough and are highly resistant to any sort of abrasion as they stretch when placed under tension. |

Sounds like I'm the only one who has bought a Sterling Rope Protector ( sterlingrope.com/safeguard-…) but I got mine a few months ago and like it. Definitely all of the above are cheaper but the rope protector works well. |
