Whatever happened to Chacos?
|
I was chatting with a friend of mine and I told him I was looking to get Chacos after having a pair I loved in college. He told me that quality has gone down hill and that they aren't made in America anymore, or at least only the custom ones are. Also no more vibram sole? I used Chacos a bunch for hiking and approach shoes and am sad to hear if this is true. Can anyone confirm this? Am I relegated to bedrocks or lunas, which while cool don't quite fit right. Help a crunchy climber avoid wearing shoes. |

I’ve put mine through the wringer and they’ve held up well. Chaco just came to a local coffee shop this past week and was giving out free stickers and doing free custom repair jobs. Mine are currently being resoled and having new straps installed. They’re a few years old, to be fair |

I've been bouncing between different sandel brands for years and years, I've tried Choco, Rainbows, Olaki (spelled wrong I know...), tevas, birkennstocks, sperrys, and a few others. I always end up picking up another set of chocos and being disappointed. When I was a kid I emailed a picture of an eaten pair and a cute picture of my dog and they sent me a new pair immediately, now I send in a warranty claim for a torn strap after 2 months and they say it's not covered... I've tried bedrock on, but just hate the way they feel, maybe I'll pick up some Lunas next... |

Your friend is wrong, they’re fine. Pony up for a custom order if Made In The USA is important to you. Colorado and Terreno outsoles are still made by Vibram. I wish I could still order them with AquaStealth soles, but that is not Chaco’s fault. |

Jake Tarren wrote: I have both too. Lunas are great but the velcro straps don't stay on well if you have a "meaty" foot. Bedrocks are also pretty great but my big regret is not sizing up for them and also the little "thong" cuts between my toes. Maybe I'll try a newer pair and not to sound like a hipster, but it seems like when something gets just that much more popular the quality goes a bit down hill. |

The new ones aren't the same, the arch support is smaller and the quality is lower. I wear chaco flip flops, I had a pair of the old ones that I bought at an rei used gear sale and lasted 11 years and I'm an offshore fisherman. They were still going strong when my dog ate the strap when she was a puppy. New ones are much better than something like teva or a lot of other brands, you'll get a few years out of them but not a decade, and they aren't anywhere close to being as good for being on your feet all day. |

Jake Tarren wrote: And by "CS is shit" you mean they won't send you free sandals when an ill-trained animal destroys them? Maybe that is why they can't afford to give good CS? One is a courtesy, the expectation of that treatment is not poor CS. |

I just got rid of my last USA Z1 pair that had the vibram soles, I've had a newer model for since Feb and its been fine. |

I heard he was living under an overpass in Sacremento. |

ayve lost me edge |

Greg Steele wrote: Uhh, no. Did you even read my above posts in this thread? As I said above, they refused to cover a flip flop failure after ~2 months of normal wear. That _is_ "shit customer service" when I paid 60USD+ or whatever they cost... |

I wear mine year round. I soak them in hot springs, swim in the lakes, hike them to death, lose them in the van, dog plays with them outside, etc. They hold up really really well. |

Chaco = lead sleds. Big, heavy and clunky. Switched to Earth Runners and never looked back. |

why not support a fellow climber from VT? Custom options available and uses BD webbing. I can attest to the comfort and quality. https://www.deliberatelifedesigns.com/shop |

Chaco are still great, yes they are big, clunky, heavy, but they also are durable and comfortable. Upgrade for the vibram soles if you can afford it, their chaco grip doesn't last nearly as long and isn't as grippy. |
