Getting to the Gunks from NYC via public transit + bike?

I'm considering taking the MetroNorth to Poughkeepsie and then biking (or I heard there are buses) there.

Is this doable? Biggest thing holding me back from outdoor climbing is lack of a vehicle, my friends aren't as interested in climbing as me and don't really wanna put in the effort of finding a way outdoors. I'm pretty obsessed with climbing, go about 4 times a week and have been absolutely dying to get outside, especially now that its summer.

Once I can get to the Gunks I'll figure out finding partners to climb with hahah. I'm new to outdoor so I feel like a burden needing a way there and a guide to show me the ways, eliminating one of those will make me feel better. If you wanna climb with me hit me up! I climb 5.11C-D ish, my name is Elijah i'm 22 ( 951-2zero3-eight245 )

In the city I climb at the cliffs, both gowanus and LIC.

Most people take the Trailways bus and hitch a ride to the cliff from there

Yeah hitching is generally pretty easy from the bus.

I think there’s a Facebook group where people link up for ridesharing partners etc. and I think being willing to help pay for gas/rental car will go a long way towards offsetting your inexperience.

+1 to the Facebook group. There's also the UCAT (Ulster County Area Transit) shuttle that runs between the Po'K train station and New Paltz. Check their schedule (online somewhere... sorry I don't have the link), but I believe it meets most trains arriving from NYC.

Trailways and hitchhike, if you’re carrying a rope people will know exactly what you need. Train to Poughkeepsie and bike would take way too long, eat into climbing time. Unless you want to go up for mult. days.

Better yet is to find partners on Facebook or at the gym and carpool.

Or buy a beater and be the one with the car giving people rides. This is how I met my early partners, people I still climb with and are close friends.

Here's the UCAT link Gunkiemike mentioned.  https://ucat.ulstercountyny.gov/routes/upl/. You can also take a bike on Metro North and take the rail trail from Poughkeepsie to New Palz and on to the cliffs, https://empiretrail.ny.gov/poughkeepsie-albany/lloyd-new-paltz. Metro North bike regulations are at https://new.mta.info/guides/bikes/bike-regulations-mnr.

But if the goal is to get to the cliffs and get climbing, then a meetup or the Trailways bus are the best options.  You should also join and post on the Facebook Gunks Climbers Page at https://www.facebook.com/groups/145997465580277; you can probably score a ride share from there.

The most important piece of climbing equipment for NYC climbers is a car.

otherwise Trailways + hitchhike will get you there the quickest.  Much faster than going to Poughkeepsie.

Just find someone in nyc with a car that climbs at the gunks!

What everyone else said, but also it's very doable by bike. Depending on when you're going, I'm local and may be able to give you a ride. Feel free to DM me and I'll share my cell number. Also, when I was a member of the LIC Cliffs, there were always postings for people with a car looking for trad leaders or with a rack looking for a car. Maybe worth posting something on the bulletin board there?

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
