Shorts Recs

Hi all, My climbing shorts are getting long in the tooth and starting to fall apart so I'm looking to replace them. They are a pair of OR Voodoo shorts, before OR took away the thigh pocket. I had originally ordered a pair of Ferrosis and returned them after 1 climbing session when they were already pilling where my harness rubs. OR doesn't make the Voodoo anymore (and changed it significantly before dropping it entirely). Looking for something that's soft shell material, some stretch, durable, zippered thigh pocket, zippered rear pocket, ideally no integrated belt (though not a deal breaker). I have a pair of Arcteryx Gamma pants that I love and a pair of BD alpine technician pants that are ok. Anyone have anything they really like? Side note, does anyone have a fleece or softshell jacket they like to wear while climbing? Thinking durable cuffs and shoulders to stand up to being shoved into cracks, scraped against rock, etc. |

Mammut hiking shorts are super nice, zippered pockets and super stretchy fabric. As far as something to wear while climbing, I would go just an r1 style fleece. You don’t have to deal with pilling issues like a soft shell and they keep you warm and are just as breathable. I have a rab ascender light hoody but they all do the same thing |

BD Valley shorts are my absolute favorite, though I never see anyone else wearing them. Very light, very stretchy... also happens to have the zippered pockets. Very low profile integrated belt that's just a thin hook that hooks to sewn webbing. |

$10 summer shorts at Sam's club. The Eddie Bauer one's are perfect for summer climbing. I also grabbed a pair of sweat-pant shorts that are super comfy with a harness - I wear these until it gets hot and then switch out. Call me crazy, but I stopped buying expensive, outdoor branded shorts/pants and I will never go back. They are always $10-$20 new, last about as long (in some cases longer) than fancy outdoor clothing, and are just as comfortable if you can find pants small enough. Everything is made with stretch fabric these days, and sweat pants are the best climbing pants anyway imo. They are comfy, stretchy, surprisingly burly, and cheap AF. The only drawback is that everyone jokes about how you look a little homeless. I've been rocking the same pair of sweats through three seasons of climbing and they are holding up great. I ripped through the zion stretch pants in the same amount of time. |

Prana Zion short. The rear pocket isn’t zippered but it has the flap that covers the pocket and prevents things from falling out. I climb with my wallet there all the time. |

Kühl makes some really nice hiking shorts that are fantastic for climbing. Pants as well. |

I like the Gerry Venture shorts from Costco, although the newest ones no longer have the zippered thigh pocket. However, I see they have similar material shorts by 32 degree that do have the zippered thigh pocket. They're about $12. |
