Using the Edelrid HMS Bulletproof Triple FG Carabiner with a Grigri
Backcountry has a decent deal on the Edelrid HMS Bulletproof Triple FG Carabiner right now but the reviews regarding its usage with Grigris are concerning. Has anyone here used this specific carabiner with a grigri? If you do please let me know what model of grigri you have as well. Thank you! |
Why bother using a steel inset biner with Grigri since the rope isn’t rubbing on biner anyway Edit: after reading the reviews that would really convince me not use it, just asking for trouble |
curious why you would use a bulletproof with a grigri? It seems like a waste of the big advantage of a bulletproof, which is durability where the rope runs over it. If the rope isn't running over the steel part, then it's just a big heavy carabiner. |
The bulletproof has a wider i-beam style spine shape that causes the GriGri to bind up. If you like Edelrid or that style of carabiner, have a look at the Edelrid Strike (aluminum) or Edelrid Bruce (steel), and position the GriGri under the cross-load spring side. |

I’m a huge fan of the Petzl Freino for grigri use. That spur is great for lowering. It’s ridiculously expensive though. REI has it on sale for $37. Thank goodness for REI dividends! |

Petzl advices against using an HMS with the Grigri. Why not use a small d-locker as recommended? |
Yeah, I have that carabiner. I tried using it with the Grigri and it could usually clip but would get stuck unclipping. I wouldn't recommend it for a grigri. Now I just use a regular offset D carabiner for the grigri and use the edeldrid carabiner for tube-style belay devices. |

Something like this biner should be all you need: https://www.rei.com/product/111231/petzl-smd-twist-lock-autolock-carabiner |

Have both and can confirm the gri gri gets stuck. Wouldn’t recommend using together |

2nd the Petzl Sm'D Twistlock. Even has the hole for the keeper cord mod. |
