5.10 Moccasym alternitives
|
Hey y'all I'm trying to find a pair of slippers like the old 5.10 Moccasym, sensitive, agile, etc. I've tried the new niad moccs, but they seem stiffer, chunky, and far less sensitive than the og. I get the advantage of having more rubber, but if I want a stiff shoe, burly shoe, I wouldn't be climbing in slippers. I love soft and sensitive shoes. Any thoughts on alternatives to the Niad Moccasyms that hit closer to the originals? |

The new Scarpa Vapor S sounds like it might fit the bill. |

I'm sold on UP moccs, they seem to be lasting well and feel real close to the older 5.10 design. Maybe the 5.10 rubber is a little stickier? I can't tell myself. |

The 5.10 NIAD sucks ASS!!! Why did Adidas do away with everything good about the OG moc?? |

Caveat, I've never owned Moccosyms so I cant make a direct comparison, but LS cobras are soft and sensitive (just like me). They are also the only Sportiva rock shoes that I've tried that actually fits me pretty well. They stretch a lot so I suspect that has a lot to do with it. |

If Mad Rock would start actually putting a midsole in their shoes the remora would be a great slipper. Lots of toe rubber, comfy wide fit (great if your feet are too narrow for 5.10s), solid low-dead-space heel without too much achilles pressure, but they're so damn floppy it's impossible to do anything but smear. God, what a squandered shoe. If you just want an ultra-soft slipper they'll do ya, but be aware that soft is _SOFT_ with them. I've contemplated getting them resoled with a stiff-midsole upgrade but IDK how that'd work in practice. They do last forever and take a resole well, I'll say. |

I do not have much experience with the original Moccasym, but I believe that the heel on the UP Mocc is quite a bit deeper, especially in the larger sizes. I know a few people who liked the Moccasym who struggle with heel fit on the UP Mocc becasue of this change, just something to be aware of if you have extremely narrow or shallow heels. As for other alternatives, lots of folks with wider feet like the Evolv Rave, if you want crazy soft and sensitive there is the La Sportiva Mantra but it has no-edge, Acopa has the Enzo but it is a little more pointy and geared towards bouldering and hard thin cracks than all around climbing. I do not have much personal experience with any of these, I am just listing them to give you more options not already in the thread. But also the UP Mocc and Lace are amazing, with the Mocc being a bit softer and the Lace a bit stiffer (although they soften up a lot once broken in). They get my recommendation. |

How does the sizing of the UP moccs compare to the old moccasyms? What size UPs do people wear vs. their old 5.10s? |

Has anyone tried the UP Duels and know how they compared to the UP Moccs and 5.10 Moccs? |

The new UP Moccs feel great, but the rubber is so soft, it wears out pretty quickly. I understand there's a tradeoff here: better sensitivity in exchange for giving up some durability. But they took it a little too far to the sensitivity side of things for me. |

I love my original Moccasyms and just had them resoled by Jay at Backcountry Cobbler, who does fine work. I also have a pair of Sportiva Cobras. While I enjoy the Cobra as a gym shoe, it’s distinct from the Moccasym in being narrower and stiffer than the 5.10 slipper. It can edge better than it can smear, in my opinion, and it’s also pretty straight and narrow in the toe - perhaps similar to the “knurling” that someone mentioned above with the Katana. I have no experience with the Mantra but would love to try it someday, perhaps not as a softie slipper but as something more akin to a comfortable Futura. |

The UP Moccs don’t seem to stretch as much as 5.10 Moccs did. The rubber wrap around the toe is to blame. They are excellent though. I’ve been wearing 5.10 Moccs since 1999 or so. |
