Barefoot, batshit lady at the gunks
|
I witnessed the beginning of what I thought would be a kinda normal free solo of three pines at the gunks today. This woman (somewhere around 30-40 yo) walks up to three pines at the gunks with no shoes, no climbing gear of any kind, and no clue. She quietly jumps in front of a party about to head up. Immediately, but strangely calmly, starts using her knees to climb and feels around the rock like I image someone who is maybe blind and definitely has never been climbing might approach climbing for the first time. After 25’ or so, she breaks left to what might be Simple Ceiling, and I decide I don’t want to be anywhere near this mess. I don’t know for sure happened thereafter, but I heard in the parking lot that there was a basket rescue today. And I have to imagine it was this woman I saw, who definitely belongs in a basket. Anyone hear or know about what became of this lady? |

We saw two ambulances waiting/staged by the bridge when walking back to the parking lot a little before 4pm; don’t know anything more than that. |

While racking up at the base of The Ceiling, saw this woman starting up High Corner barefoot, with no chalk bag. She made eye contact with us and chuckled in an odd way. I ran through some rescue scenarios in my head, waited for her tell us she needed help, and was on the edge of offering assistance but didn't want to be rude in case she was actually a Barefoot Charles-esque crusher. She was not, after about 10 mins of trying to do one move about 25 feet up she finally down climbed. Scary, hope she's alright |

Can confirm a ranger got her down safely... Saw her being escorted over near three pines to sit and be interviewed. Didn’t look injured, was walking on her own two feet, but she definitely didn’t seem to be all there. Don’t know much beyond that, sounded like it was a clusterfuck that lasted a good chunk of the day |

I was climbing The Ceiling a few pitches over while this was happening. We could hear lots of shouts and radio activity. The pair on the climb next to us gave their rope to the rangers to make the rescue more efficient. I believe she got about half way up and then needed help. Other climbers on the ground who saw her on the ground said she was on another planet and was way too giggly and smiley to not be on a lot of drugs. She wasn't injured at all. |

oh shit. what did she look like? |

So the lesson here is when you see someone like this at a crag and you aren’t sure about mental status…ASK QUESTIONS! If I were there I would of stopped her. Yes…under no circumstances would I let anyone ruin my…yours or first responders day. Someone intervening beforehand could of made a better day for all involved. Peace! |

we had a lady in our bar once that was dressed in very expensive ski clothes but had checked out mentally. she wander back in the kitchen and we all assumed she was a friend of someone? she came right behind the line where myself and two other guys were cooking the dinner shift; when she started flipping steaks on the grill we all asked each other who she was with? found out that she was not with any of us so we gently steered her back to the bar. Understand we were extremely busy feeding 200+ people so no time to dive into the situation. apparently she got behind the bar and helped the bartenders for a bit before they gently steered her away. Yes you do get treated differently if you are a good looking woman.. anyways we lost track of her and didn't think too much of it. The next morning on my way to the store to get my newspaper and hangover medicine I saw her wrapped up in a sheet of plastic sleeping on the bench of the stone fireplace of the ski area next to our Restaurante. smoke coming out the chimny so she had re started the fire and kept it going... I was only about 20 years old at the time with very little life experience so i just nursed my hangover home and tried to get ready to go back to work and do it all over again. With the knowledge/life experience I have now i would absolutely have talked to her that morning and established her well being and tried to get her some help... |
