Cheap locking accessory carabiners?
|
I am looking for an inexpensive, lightweight locking carbiner to use to secure walkie-talkie, inReach, etc. to the outside of my packs and harness. I would like it to be able to hold at least 2-4 kN, after hearing stories of people having inReaches and such ripped off their packs in climbing falls while using the crappy biner that comes with. The top-of-the-line option would probably be the DMM XSRE, at $18, 4 kN, and only 10g. There is also this option from Stubai, which is $12, 1 kN, and 19 g. Anybody have any other ideas? I would love to hear about what some of y'all have done in this situation. |

Tape the gate shut. |

Does it really need to be locking? I don’t like having any non-climbing rated carabiners on me while climbing. I would use a metolius fs mini or something. |

I understand the argument for not having climbing specific biners on you but I think the XSRE is a good choice, it's still really strong and to me I only really only envision using these biners in an emergency rappel, for this application an XSRE is plenty strong enough, expensive biner to leave behind mind you. |

I hear ya, but I don't carry tape while skiing and it would be a pain to re-tape every time I want to pull my radio off to use it.
I would like locking for peace of mind that I'm not going to lose my expensive communication device when I might really need it, and I don't think it adds much weight to a small biner. For climbing, I am envisioning keeping it on either my chalk bag waist cord or haul loop, where I wouldn't confuse it with a fully rated biner. I think I agree with Seb here, the XSRE is strong enough that it does serve a purpose as a bail piece, which is better than the cheap biners most of this stuff comes with. |

If you're not planning on opening and closing it a ton, you might consider the 5mm stainless quick link made by CAMP - rated to 25 kn, 21g. $8 at Backcountry |

I love the XSRE lockers for my dogs skijor/mtb setup. I had some of the nonlocker versions but they would unclip so much i quickly went to just using quick links until the XSRE came out. They sound perfect for what you are wanting to use em for. Plus they come in lots of fun colors too! |

Tool tether lanyards for work at height can often be found with really nice small carabiners, sometimes with twist locks and even swivel bases. Note that typically they are rated for a tool weight being dropped, not the actual pull test break strength of the carabiner. |

What about the Grivel Plume locking? Then you get a small real locking carabiner… |

Small Amazon no-name carabiner marketed for hammocking or something works great. |

Put the inReach inside your pack. No carabiner required. |

Simple quick-link might do it. |

If I want to have the inReach (mini) in the open so that I can receive unanticipated messages, I tie it on with 4mm cord. I use my phone to interact with it, so it doesn't need to be a long cord. My usual tie-on spot is the mesh exterior pocket of my chalkbag. (and I tie that chalkbag around my waist with 6mm cord) |
