Climbing suggestions for intermittent Rapid City visitor
|
Hi all- My work brings me to Rapid City (actually Pine Ridge but I fly in/out of Rapid) about once a month. I had been scheduling my time here strictly for work thinking "South Dakota is flat" but I am wrong. There seems to be plenty of climbing (especially on the W side near-ish Rapid City and PR, Rushmore etc). The issue now is partners; my preferred style is multipitch trad (still learning to properly lead; follow 5.10) but that's not really conducive to new partners and short term climbing, etc, etc. I guess my question is: what's the scene like? Are the crags (and climbers) such that if I show up with my gear (and obviously otherwise am polite and friendly and responsible) to a TR area I may be able get in some laps (and do some belaying)? What areas (if any) tend to better for that type of casual climbing (not necessarily easy grades but casual commitment) rather than "adventure climbing" which is generally going to be teams/partners familiar w/ each other and defined objectives (aka not wanting some FNG they don't know). Should I just boulder? (any place I can rent a crash pad...Roam'N Around?) Any gyms that have crag days I can sign up for? Or lastly, any guiding services you'd recommend to get on some multipitch. Thanks for any tips! Arthur |

Wow, lots of questions.

For guide services: Sylvan Rocks Climbing School; Brandon and team have the experience to put you on the fun multi-pitch routes in the Hills or on Devils Tower Wyoming Mountain Guides; They also guide Devils Tower but if you had some time to sneak a bit further away they do some big stuff in the Bighorns |

The responses and types of responses are helpful actually, thanks. I'll message Sylvan Rocks to see if they'll guide me on something on Cathedral Spires. |

Garrett- not sure if you know them or just googled it but I emailed Sylvan Rocks and Brandon got right back to me, super responsive. Great first impression. |

Black Hills Climbing coalition usually puts on "crag days" where they set up a bunch of TR at specific walls over memorial day and labor day. Keep an eye on their facebook for annoucements |

South Seas in the Mt Rushmore area is probably the most hopeful place in the Southern Hills to bum a belay. |

I’m also new to the area and looking for climbing partners. Didn’t know about the forums on mountain project and I went ahead and got a guide fro sylvan rock, pricey but worth the money. Going up Devils tower tomorrow if the weather holds out. That being said theirs a cliff face just outside rapid city-Falling Rocks I believe with TR, sport and some teas options I think. Been meaning to hit that area up but haven’t found any belay partners, so if your still looking for a belay, I’m here til mid June. |
