Sleeping Black canyon
|
Hi, where to sleep near Black canyon of the gunnison ? National Forest or BLM ? We are going climbing. Thank You |

There are campgrounds in the park ($). One each for North rim and South rim. Free, dispersed camping on FS and BLM lands outside the park. If your climbing plans are N rim based I live in Paonia, about one hour's drive away and you could camp here. |

Thanks for response!. If You know, could You please provide details of free camping place outside the park(which side?) the most desired are places in Forest and close to climbing routes 5.9-5.11d? |

Black Canyon dispersed on BLM lands south of the canyon, off the CO-347 road near Montrose, Colorado 81401. BLM.gov/colorado North Rim dispersed on BLM lands, off C77 Road near Crawford, Colorado 81415. BLM.gov/visit/gunnison-gorge-wilderness |

If it’s your first time in the Black you should try to get a pay site at the N rim. It’s a unique place, with a lot of history. Many climbs top out a hundred yards from the campground. Probably Colorado’s most iconic climber campground. |

I agree with Kevin. |

Listen to Kevin. 100% worth it to pay a couple bucks and top out at your camp site. Super classic experience, the BLM camping also has no shade whatsoever and is pretty dismal. Paid sites are a good hang and let you drop into the canyon immediately upon getting up. |

Looking to go there this weekend, did it seem melted out? Hoping to do Scenic Cruise. Thanks! |

"Probably Colorado’s most iconic climber campground." Seriously, north rim campground is mega-classic. It's so beautiful and well-maintained. The idea that you could walk from your tent site to and from the climbing, never touch your car, is insanely special. Only problem is, there's only 13 sites and being first come first serve with non-climbers in the mix, it must be hard to get a site in peak season. |
