Does my perfect alpine (ski) pack exist?

I'm looking for a combination of a Black Diamond Distance 15L and a Clio Gear alpine pack with specific ski features. An alpine fast pack that can also ski. There was a North Face video not too long ago where TNF made their two athletes a custom pack that largely fit the bill here by combining their alpine sack with their trail running vest.

My ideal requirements:

  • 25-30L with expandable roll top to ~35-40L
  • Running vest harness (with least a few stretchy pockets to carry soft flasks, food, etc on the shoulders) that prevents bounce.
  • Waist strap (i like to carry water/tools at the waist)
  • Secure rope carry
  • Simple and secure ice axe carry
  • Ski carry
  • Quick side-zip access
  • A separate compartment for shovel/skins

Some MYOG person out there must've put all of this together. Apocolypse Equipment has made it close to my ideal pack, but I cannot figure out if they are still in business since they've been sold out for the last ~6 months. I'm about to buy a sewing machine and start a new hobby.

Apocalypse is very much still in business and still making excellent packs.

If you choose to go with a mass produced pack, the Blue Ice Firecrest is pretty close to what you're looking for.

Anyone have input on the Apocalypse sac with the avy gear pocket against your back, opposed to on the outside of the pack? It seems uncomfortable with the gear poking you, but maybe it makes sense that this gear stays put closer to the body so while your exchanging layers and skins and food all day long the bag doesn't sag away from you. Thoughts?

learn to sew!  I've modified every pack I've owned for about thirty years.  Just found a Hyperlite Mountain Gear cheap/used, and spent last week turning it into my fantasy alpine ski/climbing pack.  If you know exactly what you want, the best way to get it is to do it yourself.

I just got Arcteryx alpha35L, as alpine just no ski option. I wanted all those options as you have mentioned but once I have tried this one , it was good without any additional requirements. Especially when on rope most of the time .

Just the ski carry is bummer

this one https://www.expedusa.com/collections/alpine-backpacks/products/serac-35

or the dyneema version if you have more money to burn https://www.expedusa.com/collections/alpine-backpacks/products/icefall-40

For reference my main climbing partner got herself the Serac 35, years ago, as a "do evertyhing" backpack (cragging, MP, travel, mountaineering, ice climbing, skiing etc...) and love it to bits.

My ideal requirements:

  • 25-30L with expandable roll top to ~35-40L YES
  • Running vest harness (with least a few stretchy pockets to carry soft flasks, food, etc on the shoulders) that prevents bounce. NO but you can add yours
  • Waist strap (i like to carry water/tools at the waist) YES
  • Secure rope carry YES
  • Simple and secure ice axe carry YES, especially if you use this https://www.expedusa.com/products/tool-blade?_pos=1&_sid=63f4ff919&_ss=r
  • Ski carry YES
  • Quick side-zip access YES
  • A separate compartment for shovel/skins YES, in the front

edit: know that I think about it this one meets all your requirements as well but would be too damn heavy for me https://www.expedusa.com/products/couloir-40?pr_prod_strat=use_description&pr_rec_id=b13c5ecbd&pr_rec_pid=7837971579097&pr_ref_pid=8083542999257&pr_seq=uniform

this could also do the trick minus the side access https://ultimatedirection.com/all-mountain/

Why not the Cilo 30b/z ski? a bit hard to find but killer packs.

The Blueice firecrest 28L is quite close to what you're looking for. It doesn't expand, but is pretty big, or you can get the 38L version which compresses super well.

What about this one? Looks sweet. https://www.mountainproject.com/forum/topic/124178372/fs-30l-ski-pack-full-side-zip-price-drop

Oh thank you, thank you! No vest style straps but I can throw in a water bottle pouch for the shoulder straps that I’ve made.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
