Source for good repair tape?
|
I've always carried tenacious tape in my Repair kit when on long climbs, but have been interested in a blog post here. Tenacious tape works fine, but I have found that it sometimes doesn't hold up as well, especially if you're washing the garment ever. In it, a couple of tapes from Germany and Austria are mentioned (Betrafol, Ampicoll) as well as Tyvec tape for siding houses is mentioned as a much better alternative. This has gotten me thinking- has anyone used these tapes or something similar? Do you know where and how to get them in the US? Would sail repair tape be just as good? Would Tyvec tape be crinkley as a patch? Curious about people's experiences before I go out and buy a bunch of rolls of tape. If anyone has a hookup for where to buy the Betrafol tape let me know! |

Funny you mention this, I've been going through a similar thing. Betrafol isn't available in the US. In the US there is Tyvek tape, and 3M 8087CW. I think the 3M product is better but YMMV. Of note is the stuff from fixmytear. I sent them a message asking some questions about their product and they sent me a 6ft section for free, which I thought was very generous. It seems like it will work well as a short-term fix when you're out in the field. Not sure on the long-term durability or how it will hold up in the washing machine as I just got it and put it on a pair of pants two days ago. As always, NoSo patches are by far the best on the market for permanent patches. The Gear Aid stuff is pretty terrible in comparison. The only problem with NoSo is that they're not very easy to apply in the field in my experience. At home it's super easy, use a hairdryer. I've washed a pair of softshell pants with their patches on it probably 15-20 times and they're completely bomber |

I've seen recommendations for the tape made for sails . Haven't tried them. Something like this https://www.amazon.com/Nautos-PSP-SPINNAKER-REPAIR-TAPE/dp/B017OCPWVI |

I've been using Tyvek as my repair tape for a while. It works very well and holds in spots Tenacious Tape won't. You can also find a 150ft roll at any big box home improvement store for the same price as 3 TT rolls. Just be aware that it is very thin and the edge can be really difficult to find on a roll, even with your fingernails. |

I'm surprised the tyvek tape works. I've been using 3m 8067 flashing tape. As long as I press it down really well it sticks great and is flexible. Kind of hard to cut well due to flexibility though, as it will stretch and stick to scissors. Has been through the wash a couple of times with no peeling. |

I have used Tenacious Tape. I've used the Wiglav tape (similar to Tyvek tape, but made in Switzerland.) They both work well. My current favorite is this stuff: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001OPO13M?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details Sticks to fabric very well, doesn't seem to come off. It's clear, which is nice. |

Thanks for the recommendations, I'm definitely going to check out the fixmytear and a few of the 3M tapes. Bump in case anyone has info on how to get Betrafol, Ampacoll, Wigluv, or equivalents in Europe to the US. |

I forgot to mention, the thing that makes 3M 8087CW so good as a repair tape is that it can be reliable applied down to near 0F. Once applied it works down past -20F without peeling or cracking |

If you want bombproof result I highly recommend this tape https://www.amazon.com/AP-Products-Sika-017-413828-25-Multiseal/dp/B01BDWQSZY/ref=sr_1_2?crid=32BNBT7FQISA3&keywords=SIKA+MULTISEAL&qid=1680020139&sprefix=sika+multiseal%2Caps%2C371&sr=8-2 |

Fabien M wrote: Does that have a removable backing? I've found plenty of awesome tapes so far that are super sticky and work well in the cold, but dont work unless you take the whole roll. Current contenders are sail cloth tape and the cold weather 3M tape. |

Here's a roll of the 3M tape that is 5 yards. This is what I bring with me, and it fits in the palm of your hand https://www.grainger.com/product/3M-Film-Tape-Housewrap-15C941?searchQuery=15C941&searchBar=true&tier=Not+Applicable |

I got some 3M 808CW in the mail today. It looks solid for repairs at home but doesn't have a backing to take smaller sections in the field. Grr.... Very bummed about this, I guess the "vinyl backing" is the backing on the tape not a packing to peel off it. If anyone knows of a good field repair tape (not interested in duct tape because it's temporary and leaves a residue that makes future repairs harder) let me know! Also if anyone wants to buy a roll of 3m 808cw let me know. I got two rolls and definitely only need one. |

Bump. Anyone know of a good tape with a removable backing? |
