Girth Hitch Master Point for Top Roping

Girth hitch master points are in vogue and seem to be generally accepted as an efficient and safe option into which one can tie and off of which one can belay.

Through which of the configurations below would you be comfortable top roping? I would feel most comfortable with D, but would also be comfortable with C. I wouldn’t feel comfortable with A, and I am most uncertain about B.

Testing appears to confirm there is very little slippage on single girth hitched master point biners, but I have not seen any tests on girth hitched opposite and opposed master point biners. B doesn’t pass the eye test to me, but it seems like it would be a convenient arrangement.

A.

B.

C.

D.

I use A/B all the time in winter, A is the easiest to tie as a Master point and it does not freeze. B is a regular top rope anchor. Both are bomber and fine.

C/D are overkill

D looks nice to me but then again I’ve been called “overly safety conscious” before.

A clove hitch creates a masterpoint 90° offset from a girth hitch. Either do D with a ring rated for 10+KN or just use a clove; on vertical or slabby terrain you want the rope running along on the rock, not into it.

What are those biners?

A or B

def not wasting time with C or D, too much hardware and it in no way safer than A or B

I like the idea of clove hitching a single biner, rather than girth hitching. Even with the grivel twin gate, I feel less inclined to TR of a single biner.

Regarding B, the girth hitch seems like it would slip more than on a single biner, in the event a leg is severed.

Unless you’re comfortable TRing on a single biner, D looks better than the others IMO
