Whitney Portal Road Conditions

Called the ranger station and they said the road is closed at the gate but didn’t have beta on where the snow line is on the road or if it’s plowed from the gate to the trailhead.

Was wanting to come down from Tahoe for a ski mission if/when the weather allows it and was going to bring an electric bike if the road is dry.

Thanks for any info

These are from yesterday...massive avalanches over Onion Valley Rd and Owens Point.  Those cover the roads to the north and south of Portal Rd.

The road is actually closed right at the edge of town in lone Pine because of the road being washed out and damaged. Snow line might be around 7K.

Is this confirmed? I can't find any updates from the FS or CalTrans

According to Inyo county: https://www.inyocounty.us/sites/default/files/2023-03/CURRENT%20ROAD%20UPDATE%203.15.23%20REV.%20A.pdf as of 3/15 Whitney Portal rd is open (presumably to the winter closure point).

I can confirm road is open for a ways past the Alabama Hills.

Well it took almost a month between weather and life….but I’m heading down from Truckee  on Wednesday.

Anyone with an update perhaps? Winter closure gate or open to the campground? Sorry to beat a dead horse

thanks

Two days ago it was stilled closed at the bottom gate.

I would consider trail runners as it’s almost to the portal by the time you hit snow now.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
