Cutting a Petzl RAD Line?

Me and a buddy both want a 30m RAD line...not having any experience with hyperstatic ropes before, is there any reason we shouldn't buy a 60m and cut it in half to take advantage of the *slightly* cheaper cost per meter of the 60m length?

As a side note how does the RAD line hold a knot should we want to tie the two together to get close to a 60m rope again for longer raps?

You can knot them together just fine with a double/tripple fishy, FT 8, etc.
When you cut it, you may find melting doesnt work to well to keep the ends from fraying, you would then use superglue as "whipping". I have not used the RAD line but have to do this glue whipping with other aramid sheathed ropes, and of course with tech 12.

Cool, I figured the sheath might not cut well with a hot knife. I'll have to try the superglue thing.

Get your materials straight.

RAD has no aramid. Wrap it in tape, cut it with a hot knife.

I don't know where you are looking, but HMPE is not aramid.

Edit: Maybe older versions had aramid? I'd just go by what petzl lists though, unless you are specifically seeking out old stock, so no aramid.

It did contain aramid. I just hit my petzl rep and he confirmed no aramid no more.....As a constant in life, change will always be there!
But yeah, since the appears new stock is aramid free, should be simple as doing a traditional cut and melt.

You can melt nylon into the cut end to help seal the ends.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
