Petzl Pur Line for ski mountaineering

Hi

I want to upgrade my current 7.9 mm half rope that I use for my ski mountaineering objectives and have thus been looking in to buying a more specific rope for that purpose. Naturally, I have been looking into the likes of Petzl Rad line, Mammut glacier cord etc, however, both of them comes with a hefty price tag. I noticed the Petzl Pur line and it seems like a nice alternative, without totally breaking the bank.

Does anyone here have any experience of using the Petzl Pur Line for this specific purpose? I have done some research myself and I am aware that crevasse rescue and rappelling solely is not the Pur Lines purpose, however, to me the Rad Line and the Pur Line is pretty similar.

Thanks in advance!

People have and do use the pur line for both of these purposes.

My experience with the Purline is that it plays nicely with the Tibloc and Petzl pulleys, but with a Reverso you will want at least a second biner. I got a Grivel scream plate and have been meaning to test them together but haven't gotten around to it.

Would be nice to know how the Grivel scream performs with the Purline, seems like a good solution to its slippery sheath.

I have used the BD Alpine Guide device to rap on pur'line.  It works but still need two biners for single strand raps or double strand raps if free-hanging or icy ropes.  Everything is a bit trickier with the pur'line because it is so slippery.  Regular prussik cord won't work, you need either really skinny cord (I think some use amsteel cord) or as mentioned above, tiblocs and micro/nano traxion pulleys.

I got to try the Purline yesterday when rapping into a couloir. The rappel was not super steep and I did it with skies on. I used a regular reverso with one locker and a beal jammy as my prusik. The friction felt absolutely fine in that setting, but I can see that increased friction would be necessary if the rope is wet/free-hanging rappel.

I also asked Mark Smiley about his opinion on the Purline and he recommended me getting a Purline instead of a Radline.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
