I am thinking about getting a Petzl RIG for work and there is an amazon seller who is consistently selling them for around $100 off of MSRP. All the photos are the stock ones from Petzl and it has 300+ great reviews, but it specifically says that it is from 2018. I am not super concerned about the device being 5 years old, but I am wondering if this particular model has any known issues or any reason why they would be being sold this cheap. Are they more features they added later?
Hi Sam, I own several Petzl RIG's and Petzl ID's. Here is a link to the key differences between the 'new' versus 'old' RIG: Link: https://www.petzl.com/INT/en/Professional/News/2018-8-6/The-new-RIG--tech-tips-updated The 'new' 2018 model has a stainless steel wear plate, and the handle defaults to the 'park brake' position when released - a very handy feature... no pun intended :) It also can sustain higher working loads (refer to the link above).
Note that the 'RIG' has no anti-panic function, and so its generally regarded as a device for more experienced rope access operators. The Petzl ID has an anti-panic function, and also has an 'anti-error catch' for knuckle-heads who accidentally reeve the rope backwards. I don't see any current product recalls affecting the RIG, and I assume you have certain consumer rights when purchasing through amazon... (ie consumer guarantees). Metal products can sit on a sellers shelf - eg the lifespan (life expiry) of a metal carabiner is undefined (which is different to textile products). So a new and unused Petzl RIG sitting on a sellers shelf causes no issues (unless of course it has become exposed to corrosives substances, salt air spray, etc). When you take ownership of your product, check it for defects (as with any PPE you purchase, always check it before entering it into your inventory).
In case the OP has not already purchased this, I’m selling a current model for $100 (10-11.5mm ropes). Used once and is in like-new condition. PM me if you’re interested.
