I acquired this baselayer from a secondhand gear shop a while back - and the tag text is too faded for me to identify it except that I can barely read '80% merino 20% poly'. Its a fairly heavyweight thermal, most useful as an expedition or winter baselayer. The part I love the most is zipper and hood: the 1/4 zip lets you dump heat when needed, and the hood has double layer of fabric and adds a lot of warmth similar to an under-helmet balaclava. The only thing I don't love is that the sleeves are short on my lanky arms. Below is a crappy pic of the tag/hood/collar.
The only hooded baselayer that patagonia currently offers is the capeline air (which is quite expensive and has no zipper). What's up with that?
Can anybody ID it or recommend me something similar from another brand?
That piece is at least 10 years old. My guess is closer to 12. I had a couple of them. They felt great but didn’t last long. I believe the ratio of wool to poly changed not long after this piece came out to make it last longer. Patagonia hasn’t had that much wool in the line since.
unfortunately Patagonia doesn’t have anything in the line that is similar right now. The closest thing that is often available is the thermal weight zip hoodie. It is all nylon/poly though.
I’d assume there are some options available in a similar weight fabric from other manufacturers.
Thanks for the info! It does look like a similar cut, likely it turned into the Thermal weight zip hoodie - but even that one is now discontinued! I'm not super hung up on it containing merino wool, but I'm mainly interested in the features of hood + partial zip.
