Pole for Clip Stick?
|
Ive been looking around for the best stick clip solution. Ive used the Trango Beta clip and I like it, but I don’t like that the head is plastic and it seems a bit expensive for what it is (~$100?). Other clip solutions like the SuperClip look like a great option, but need a separate pole. I haven’t been able to find a good option for a painters pole which is long enough, but also packs down fairly small like the Trango stick due to the limited number of telescoping sections. Anyone have a recommended painters pole for using these stick clip heads? |

If you can find somewhere they're in stock, these ones are fantastic: https://mountaindrifter.com/products/the-skyhook-stick-clip |

It’s only a cheap solution if you already have most of the parts, but when I want something more portable than my 4-section painters pole, I use voile straps to lash two trekking poles together, and then lash a tiny 18”-36” painters pole with a super clip to that. It ends up about 10’ total. |

I bought this clip stick recently and like it. It’s very lightweight, packs down small and extends fairly long. I see a 25% off coupon when I look right now on Amazon. |

You can use an old (or new) avalanche probe. Way more flex than a painters pole, but packs down to ~30-40cm sections. Lash, tape, or epoxy the stick clip head to the end. Longest common length is 320cm |

Anna Brown wrote: Yeah I like that stick clip as well, one big bonus for it is that it packs down small enough to fit in carryon luggage for traveling. My only complaint is that I wish it was another 3' or 4' longer, as 8' isn't long enough in some areas. |

Matt Z wrote: I did exactly this for traveling with the Super Clip . I got a dollar store broom, cut off the threaded end, then used a hose clamp and some glue/epoxy to attach it to the end of the avy probe (note that the avy probe won't have much of a lip to grip onto since it's designed to go in/out of snow easily). The flex is a bit annoying, but what's really tough is that the sections of the avy probe can rotate independently, so getting the gate aligned just right for the clip can be a chore. Still better than no stick clip, buying a pole locally, or trying to travel with something longer |

I'll just discretely leave this here... Gripclipclimbing.com |

Alan Weiner wrote: Yeah, I wish that would work. I've thought about trying to design something and driving out to my dad's house to machine it, but that's quite a bit of time/effort that I'd rather spend climbing. |

Light bulb changing pole from home depot + super clip work for me. |
|
Home depot, paint shops, lowes, all have various extension poles for about $30 that you can screw a super clip onto. You can also by an adapter that adds about a foot that you can adjust the angle for about $10. I have used this setup for about six years. Being older I have no pride so I have a 6 foot pole that extends 4 times. Great walking stick when its collapsed, |

I am looking for the beta stick pole only. It seems to be the same one as used on the skyhook. I have a super clip head and want a travel pole to take to Europe that will fit in a carry on. Anyone have any leads? |

I have the skyhook and like it, but it’s not perfect. There are some climbing shops around Bend/Smith that still have some in stock. If you call them, they might be willing to ship one to you. Probably won’t be cheap though. I’ve used the trango one too and it works fine and seems plenty sturdy. And hey, if the plastic end piece breaks, you could cobble together a way to get a super clip on it and you’ll be psyched! Not a huge fan of the Kailas (sp?) one. It’s the most flimsy (and they’re all at least a little flimsy) when fully extended and is pretty short. |

Bryan L wrote: I’m another vote for the Kailas stick clip, very happy with its easy operation and the highly packable profile. I’ve had to do a bit of climbing/scrambling to get a clip, so length could be greater, but it was kind of fun in its own way to finagle with it. It probably wouldn’t be a great stick clip for notoriously high clip areasbut it works great for my uses. |

Mike K wrote: This is what I like. Much more lightweight than a painter's pole, but plenty sturdy, and extends to 11'. Collapsed length is around 4'. My only complaint is that they lock/unlock by twisting the segments, and that mechanism can fail more easily than a flip-latch. I also had to tape, then glue the threaded piece on the end after using for a while as the original adhesive failed, but that was no big deal. I did get to check out the Skyhook in person, and that would be the one I would go with if buying a specific model for climbing as I liked the size, weight and feel over the others I've tried. The new Redpoint pole is nice, but it is soooo heavy and doesn't really go much longer or collapse much shorter than the lightbulb changing pole + superclip combo. |

Go Smith Stick, people will compliment your stick all day and your inflated ego will rise you aloft up to the chains of your proj |

Honestly that thing looks pretty tough and isn't a ridiculous price, have you used one? I promise to only use it on spicy 5.9s. |
