Biked past Klondike park outside St. Charles, MO on the Katy trail the other day, and with the leaves down now noticed there is a band of pretty impressive, clean (30-40m) sandstone cliffs facing the river with what looked like pretty decent rock, some kind of blank and some very featured. Not great pictures, but:
Made me wonder - is/has there ever been any climbing here (a quick google search didn't turn anything up)? Pretty short drive from St. Louis.... relative newbie still to outdoor climbing but looked like there was potential to me, so was surprised to not find anything about it! Trees and scrabbly slope at base maybe looked less nice, but hard to tell from a (slight) distance.
Yes, This cliff was extensively cleaned and bolted before St Charles bought the land for Klondike park. Then they banned climbing. There are some nice routes, but it’s a weird sandstone/limestone that stays sandy. It’s against park rules to climb there
Is that nicer rock also owned by Klondike Park? I’m also new to the Saint Louis area and have been loving Robinson but hoping for other nearby areas to explore too.
Ah that’s unfortunate. Thanks for the info though! Has anyone (betafund, etc.) tried to regain access or is the climbing just not good enough to warrant the effort?
