Best gloves for ice
I’m updating and revamping my kit. I like thinner gloves to lead with (I keep my big warm ones in my jacket for belays ) but they still need to have some water resistant insulation and some knuckles buster protection on them. What are you all using? |
For leading I really love the BD Terminator. Best dexterity/warm ratio IMO. People will tell you all about the showa and the are great gloves, I bought them but ended up using them more for alpine than for pure ice. |
Camp Geck Ice Pro is my go to lead glove. Rab M14 for when it’s warmer. Have 3m tape on my tool handles, which both gloves practically stick to, which helps with letting me relax my hands. |
Buying ice climbing gloves is like buying boots. Fit it by far, most important. Getting the correct length to girth ratio is crucial. While glove X has all the features I'm looking for, I can't wear it because it doesn't fit me well. Try on many different brands of gloves in the category your interested in. Once you find that one glove that was made for you. Buy 6 pairs before they are discontinued. |
I quite like these: Good dexterity. Wool terry liner provides some warmth. Gore Infineum makes them windproof and water resistant. |
Whatever glove fits your hand best. These two are flexible enough to wear when leading, but not super warm otherwise. I like them both, but wish I had the money for the Camp Gecko gloves. https://www.outdoorresearch.com/us/collection/mixalot-gloves-268047 https://www.blackdiamondequipment.com/en_US/product/torque-gloves/?colorid=5940 The Black Diamond Punisher and Enforcer gloves are better for colder weather. I have also experimented with using the cheap fishing/PVC/rubber gloves found on Amazon and the leather work gloves found at a hardware store. Not bad for the money! |
Like others state, fit is key. I love my Mountain Equipment Super Alpinist gloves. |
For leading: Outdoor Designs Diablo Tech or Black Diamond Terminator. For following: I don't really care. BD Punishers, Kinco's, whatever doesn't get me super pumped. |
My favorites are Hestra Ergo Grip Active if it is dry and Showa Temres 282 if it is wet. The Showa must be the best value glove avilable. |

This one is our best seller so far and price is very good. Customers love them but I haven't tried it yet. https://verticallstore.com/products/temres-283-02-gloves As much as I want to try it, I still have 23 pairs of OR, Kailas, Mountain Hardware and BD. So I might wait before taking a pair. I know I'm ridiculous with my 23 pairs. |
I only recommend these because I liked them all so much I bought two pairs of each... The "OR Storm Tracker Sensor" for belay/following, And for lead either "RAB Vapour-Rise", or my other favorite, "Outdoor Design Diablo" 's. These are all pretty good gloves. Just got a pair of "Mountain Equipment Direkt" gloves. The thumb tore open in about 20 minutes, once I was at the top of my lead and I was clipping the anchor. Lame. |

Temres. |
the tem-res are ~$20 here rather than the $33 USD ($42 CAD) at verticallstore |

The Showas are really hard to find in Canada, so good on Marc for trying to get them out to those that want them. I hate them personally. I found that they puncture really easily, smell like shit after two uses (and it doesn’t really come out in the wash), aren’t as dexterous as thinner gloves, and are impossible to get on and off once your hands are sweaty/wet (the lining comes out and then you end up stuffing it back in leading to air at the fingertips). I prefer OR and Rab offerings even if they are more expensive. |

https://www.rainbownetrigging.com/collections/gloves/products/282-02-black-with-cuff For those looking for the temres gloves in Canada, this company sells them a bit cheaper. Shipping is a bit expensive from the East coast to the West coast though |

The ones that keep your hands dry and warm. . . |

@Zach I’m not sure how you determine if a glove is dextrous enough for WI5 versus WI3 or 6. That seems like a pretty arbitrary (and personal) way of looking at things. If I don’t find it suitable for the purpose, I just don’t. Whether I could climb harder lines in them is moot, I don’t want to because I don’t think they’re dextrous enough. |

These have worked great for me fore years. I bring 2-3 pairs out usually since they will wet out. They are tough fleece, yet articulate well and have a suede palm to have some durability for rope handling. I belay with leather Kincos. |
