Living in Bishop for the Winter -- Looking for Beta

Hi Mountain Project community,

I've recently found some time on my hands (read: quit my job) and am considering spending January-February in Bishop area. I'll have a car, and crash pads, and capacity to sleep in my car. Does anyone have any advice for part-time work, places to live on the cheap, finding partners, etc.? I'll likely work part-time on Zoom, so I'll need access every once in a while to the internet. Anyone got any good beta for this?

Thanks,

Sam

There is a lot of free camping around Bishop on BLM land. The best place during the winter would probably be above the Happies/Sads at the Tablelands. If you want more facilities (pit toilet, fire pit, camping table), the Pit and Pleasant Valley campgrounds are really nice places to stay for cheap. There is free camping along the Owen's River Gorge road as well if you want to be closer to sport climbing. Just make sure you are paying attention to LADWP signs and not camping in those areas.

Here's a good link for camping info - essrp.org/camping

For partners, Mountain Project and just walking up to boulders and meeting people will be your best bet.

Looney Bean and Black Sheep are great places to spend the day when you need to work.

Bishop Cowork is also a good bet if you need a quieter space for a Zoom call! Many of the restaurants/coffee shops are often hiring, so if you need to pick up more work, asking around once you're here should do the trick.

Thanks you guys really appreciate the camping beta and Bishop CoWork seems so sweet. Any ideas about how I might go about finding sublets or cheap rooms somewhere? Craigslist seems pretty sparse from my searching.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
