This is very sad news! I knew him, but not well. A partner of mine lived with him and has kept in better touch with him than I did. I remember his wife was very kind and worked at the American Alpine Club library years ago before they moved back East. His wife called him to let me ask him questions about mountains in the Himalaya years ago. He was very gracious about his time, never said that who he even was, and answered all of my questions. I only talked to him one time when he came back to visit. He was a great writer and a great climber! He is missed. https://ripdeathobits.com/ed-webster-obituary-ed-webster-has-passed-away-unexpectedly-death/ |

The Ed Webster in the Obituary was 73 and from Halifax. Wrong Ed I think. He's a good friend and climbing partner of mine since the '70s. Ed lived many places, Mass, NH, Boulder, CO, then moved to Maine. He is 66 years old. We need some better sources to verify anything. |

Tom, Read the thread on the Northeastern States Forum. The obit linked by Mike Walley is indeed incorrect, but the info from folks back East seems well sourced. Unless a lot of knowledgeable people starting with IME employees are wrong, I'm afraid Ed (whom I knew only fleetingly in North Conway in the 70s) has died. |

Thanks for the reply. I still am trying to verify, pobably because it seems so surreal that my good friend is gone... |

Yes, I agree, but it is all that I could find. He was born in 1956 and he was 66. Sad day. Thanks. |

Sadly, I have confirmed that Ed passed away on Thankgiving day from a heart attack. Confirmed by his sister. We had some great times together, and I will miss him. we've been out of touch the last few years, but were still close. I give my utmost condolences to his wife, Lisa and daughter Joyelle. |

Best if we could keep it all in one thread. https://www.mountainproject.com/forum/topic/123489324/ed-webster |

Ed lived with me in 1996-97, while he was working on his Everest book. He moved out so he could move in with Lisa, his fiancée. He told me that he’d known Lisa in high school. He’d recently asked her father for her hand in marriage and then proposed. He was very calculating about winning her. My sincere condolences go to Lisa and Joyelle. |

We competed in terms of soloing new routes in the desert, but made friends 41 years ago and I even climbed some ice with him. When I saw him in '89 he showed me his fingertips. Then I showed him mine, and he was amazed I hadn't told him when we climbed. I have some posters that he and Layton Kor signed. Sad news. |

Not the most eloquent piece of writing but an obit was posted: https://snbc13.com/ed-webster-climber-mt-everest-american-author-died-at-66-death-obituary/ He spoke to my class at William Diamond Middle School in Lexington, MA where we both went to middle school when I was 11, I fell in love with climbing and specifically alpine climbing as a result. I’ve always thought back to how lucky I was to have met him and had his influence in my life. |
