Blue Ridge Parkway climbing

Hi all, Curious if anyone knows the legal status of climbing on blue ridge parkway property? I suspect officially it will be a "no" but you never know until you ask.   Does ship rock fall on BRP property?  I know there are other spots that almost certainly fall on BRP land but are and will likely never be listed. Is there any difference between bouldering and roped climbing?

thanks

Ship rock is owned by nps. Generally the property boundary for the parkway isn't too far off the road. Also not sure if ship rock is the exception or the rule in regards to climbing on the parkway

Not sure about other cases, but I read somewhere that Ship rock is the only place where climbing is allowed above the parkway

this is not a troll post, its not even upsetting so I dunno what I would be trolling for

there are quite a few pieces of rock on BRP property or at least very close, just trying to understand where they stand, and what I can and cannot do there. Probably better off asking a ranger next time I see one up there TBH

like for example are the "stoney bald" boulders on BRP property? certainly they are accessed through the parkway, so by that reasoning climbing can be accessed through the parkway legally... its literally just parking

another couple examples, the graveyard fields ice climbing area is straight up on the parkway, and technically the road side ice at the top of hwy 215 falls on blue ridge parkway property when you look at a map.  technically speaking are we breaking rules doing that?  I believe both of those areas were published in a book....

like your blank profile mark, you have contributed nothing worth while to the conversation

Purple lines indicate BRP property boundary, Ship and sunken treasure fall entirely within that property, so I am a bit confused by "ship is owned by NPS" statement.  In part because the BRP is a national park service as is Pisgah national forest I believe?

I know nothing about raven rocks, and this one does indeed seem to fall in a weird grey zone.  But the bouldering appears to be on BRP property.  again very grey because it appears to also be the "mosesH cone memorial park?

how about the Thunder hill boulders? again I know nothing about this spot just looking at places on the map.   Certainly the "below Raven rock" section is on the BRP I can see wood fencing in one of the photos so it is like 15ft off the parkway....

Devil's courthouse had climbing at one point, still does really, but it was "closed" at some point. Does that mean areas specifically need to be closed? after climbing at Crowders Mtn. once and dealing with crowds of people at the top... and seeing all the Mcidiots® that walk to the top of Devil's Courthouse I can thoroughly  conclude that tourist areas and climbing areas should be separated as much as possible.

@andre  do you remember where you read that stuff about ship being the "exception"? thanks

I don't know much about Jonathan, but I've seen his name around and he seems to know his stuff

I took your “is there a difference between ropes and bouldering“ to be a literal difference between the two.  I made a mistake and stand corrected.

Ship Rock is the only thing legal above the parkway, get caught on any other stuff and you're jeopardizing access. Lucky we still get to climb at Ship

The rock devil's courthouse is s***.  My dad climbed it back when it was open. Very loose rock.
