Anyone have any good beta for camping at Black mountain after the Boulder basin campground closes for the season 10/31/22? I will be in the area mid November and was disappointed to read the camping will be closed(should have known better). Any beta would help! Thank you!!

You mean Black Mountain campground near Idyllwild, or some other Black Mountain?

Sorry for the lack of clarity. The one near Idyllwild.

You can hike up if you’re really motivated. Otherwise there’s some decent bouldering in idy. County park is fun and has a campground, but it’s pricey. South ridge is a good option with dispersed camping and a good circuit of boulders, but it could be covered in snow as well. Id go up to south ridge, it’ll be cold but I always have a good circuit of moderate routes

I was under the impression that the road is still open up to the boulders just not the campground?

usually they close it at the highway when the first snow falls.. and we’re getting our first real storm in a couple days from now. Could be remembering wrong, but I’d plan on it being closed at the highway

Bummer thanks for the beta. Thankfully I got a rack as well. Tahquitz/Suicide and Jtree will do. There a few things I'm stoked on our there as well.

The camping at the county park is most people's default option, but in the summer it tends to be noisy at night. The yellow post camping on the South Ridge trail seems really nice, but it could be a little white-knuckle to get up the road unless you car is high clearance or 4wd. It's not legal to sleep in your car at Humber, but people do it. PM me if you're interested in a fairly secluded car camping spot near town on national forest land (not a big secret, and I believe it's legal, but if too many people used it, it would be awful).

If the road does stay open, and you do find yourself up bouldering Black Mountain, there are quite  few free dispersed sites up there.

The most pertinent question is what kind of car you drive.

O man lifted Ford Econoline the thing is a beast. Clearance will not be an issue.

Then go up Southridge. Camp at yellow posts only I have seen people get kicked out of there.

Hit up the hotline if that doesn’t work, there’s more spots but we don’t want them public.

Rad thank y'all for the beta. Last time I was at Tahquitz we camped at a rad zone above town. If any of you wanna climb me and my buddy are down.

pm me when you’re in town. i’m free weekends. My stock forester made it up south ridge last year when there was massive ruts, but it’s since been graded and it was pretty nice last time I was up there. Id give it a shot
