Hi,

Anyone have experience climbing in Colombia, especially near Medellin?  Looks like San Felix is a small crag just north of Medellin, and El Penol/Guatape a couple hours away. Would love any advise and any feedback on the climbing here!  Moved here with my wife and planning to stay for ~6 months. She’s not a climber, so also looking for climbing friends. Text/WhatsApp me at 989-274-5236 if you’re interested. Thanks!

Hi Jake,

I started my climbing journey in Medellin when I was living there a few years ago. The gym I went to/and still go to when I visit is called El Muro, in the Laureles neighborhood. Its a converted house so its tiny by US standards but the setting is creative and there is a very passionate and strong group of climbers based out there.

The closest significant crag is El Peñol (about 1.5 hours). Its a big granite monolith with sport and trad, as well as some multipitch.

Another popular area is called La Peña, its about 3 hours from Medellin near Abejorral. The owner of El Muro and some friends converted an old coffee farm on a mountain into a climber's hostel and started developing the granite outcrops. Its excellent sport climbing on granite in all the grade ranges, with tons more development potential. They have rooms and camping, a stunning view, and staying at the coffee farm makes it a really cool experience. You can get lots of climbing in over a weekend. The link is below:

I've never been to San Felix but its only a short bus ride outside of Medellin. I think its mostly a spot where local climbers go when they don't have time to drive further.

Let me know if you have any questions, I'm happy to help.

I should also mention that its fairly easy to get to these places by bus. It will take a bit longer because you'll have to go to either the Northern or Southern bus terminal, depending on where you're going, but from there its really straightforward. There are direct buses that go to pretty much every small pueblo outside of Medellin, and you can get on or off anywhere along the route.

Phil - thanks so much, I really appreciate your response and information! I’m actually going to El Muro gym tomorrow for the first time. I will definitely be checking out El Peñol and La Peña. Hoping to make some climbing friends at the gym. Thanks again!!

Hey friends! Is there anyone in medellin that's interested in climbing this week? I'd like to get out at least a day and touch some rock.

Hi there! For future reference, La Peña Abejorral is a great climbing park with a superb range of routes! There is a hostel to stay at at the base of the crags. The place is a climbing paradise. I definitely recommend it if you are in Medellin and looking to climb. Check out the list of routes here: https://www.mountainproject.com/area/116583365/la-pena-de-abejorral.. There are fewer on this site.. lots on The Crag! Check them out here

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
