Lover's Leap camping options

Hi all,

I'm planning to get out to lover's leap this weekend. It looks like sites at the campground aren't reservable. Anybody know if these usually fill up this time of year? If so, what's the best alternative?

thanks!!

The campground is open until October 10th. It is first come first served, no reservations. It is very very unlikely that it will be anywhere close to full. It has been near empty (due to the on/off opening/closing, cost increases and general hot/cold nature of the crowds this season in Tahoe).

Campground was already closed (locked gate) last weekend..

Just south of the main turnoff, you can head up Strawberry Creek Rd. and there are a bunch of nice turnoffs nestled along the side of the dirt road, that's where I usually camp.  No amenities, of course.

Anyone know why the concessionaire increased the rates so much? I'd imagine they would have more consistent and higher numbers of campers if the rate increase was less drastic, thus more profit despite lower fees.

The campground was re-opened and is open until the 10th as I said above. We successfully lobbied the Forest Service to ask the concessionaire to stay open longer. The campground is open.

Is Strawberry creek all burnt from the Caldor fire?

There was such a sweet shaded spot back in there just a little ways in before the road really started to climb, enough room for a couple of parties.  I stayed there the last time I climbed at the Leap.  I had the huge privilege of introducing a young friend to the place, climbing mid-week, did a stack of the classics and didn't have to wait for any of them, no one behind us either.  It was like climbing there back in the 80's!  I don't know if I can bear to ever go back.  Ugh.

In the 80's ,I camped on the Slippery Ford Trail several times after parking car off paved road . Never made any fires & was never hassled . Descending Hwy.50  one Winter  was dropped off at the Slippery Ford turnout  & skied down to the Leap and Strawberry Lodge.

Another update:  According to the sign on the campground bulletin board today,  the Lovers Leap campground closing date has been extended to Nov 2.
