Dyneema by the foot

Where can one buy dyneema webbing by the foot? Not easily finding a vendor online. Thanks |

https://www.sailrite.com/Notions/Webbings/Notion-Material/Dyneema Braided dyneema might be better since you can splice it and retain full strength (assuming you don’t have an industrial bar tacker for the webbing.) It’s readily available from marine supply/rigging shops. Also branded as “Spectra” and “Amstel”. |

Would UHMWPE webbing fit the bill? Certainly more affordable given Sailrite spool lengths. |

Edelrid tech webbing might be a good option, dyneema covered with nylon so it will hold a knot. |

Thank you! This is super helpful. I had previously found the 1" webbing being sold by a sailing vendor, but couldn't find anything that was narrower. Now I have. Thank you. |

Would you mind sharing a link to your find Ben? Thanks! |

For sure. In the past when I've needed 1" nylon webbing for various sewing projects (haul bag, portaledge, easy aiders) I've ordered from Strap Works. I'm brainstorming and sketching out a new project in which I was thinking it might be nice to use Dyneema webbing due to its strength, abrasion resistance, and thinner widths, but all I could initially find online was 1" and 2" Dyneema webbing from Sailrite (22 KN). But I'm interested in using 8mm, 10mm, or 12mm Dyneema webbing which is used by Mammut et al to make slings. I had a hard time finding anything like this that you could order by the foot. Edelrid Tech Webbing is a very good option at 12mm, and I found it available by the meter in multiple colors from Extrem Textile (Germany) and in only the green color from Vertical Addiction and MEC (both in Canada) and V12 Outdoor (UK). I haven't found a US vendor, but if I was going to go with this product I would contact Edelrid directly and ask for a list of US vendors. I suspect there must be one. There are other vendors online that sell Tech Webbing in 100m spools but that would be way too much for me. By searching for UHMWPE and specifying 8, 10, or 12mm I was able to find lots of high volume vendors (minimum orders of a thousand feet or more). The only volume vendor I found that had a reasonable minimum for individual use was Jude Webbing (China) at 50m rolls. There were some options maybe on Alibaba, but I didn't go down that rabbit hole. Ripstop by the Roll also carries 1" and 2" Dyneema webbing and Extrem Textile (Germany) does sell 12mm Dyneema webbing by the meter, but both are only rated to 8 KN it seems. One could also contact these volume vendors and see what they say or if they can point you towards a vendor that would be able to sell in much smaller quantities. For my project, if I end up wanting to use a thin Dyneema material, I would like do 1 of 2 things. Either (1) contact MtnTools who have a service of reslinging cams with 12mm Dyneema and see who their supplier is and/or if I can buy webbing directly from them by the foot; or (2) depending on the individual length pieces I need I would buy long Dyneema slings and cut them open to repurpose them. One attractive option are the DMM Dynatec slings as they are available in 120, 240, and 400cm (13' 1") lengths from many US vendors, including Backcountry and Rope Master. Ordering braided Dyneema rope is intriguing—and much more easily available—but I'm wanting to sew the sling to Dyneema fabric, so re-braiding is not an option. I've done some DIY home bar tacking that certainly is not as strong as an industrial bar tack but was more than enough for my purpose. With a thin Dyneema webbing I would want to experiment with my sewing machine or get all my materials prepped and then outsource the bar tacking to someone with an industrial machine. |

fwiw, I've had similar projects (portaledge, aiders, tents, etc...) Okay so for giggles, let's keep this in perspective. For your project you're wanting full strength dyneema slings sewn using z stitch? why then, would you be worried about the strength of the webbing being 8kn or less? surely your portaledge isn't sewn using true bar tacs? neither is mine. yet it's strong enough to serve its not critical purpose. Unless your project falls under PPE, i see no difference in sewing a 5/8 UHMWPE webbing from RSBTR or a 12mm dyneema sling from mtntools. If sewn using z-stitch. i am probably missing something. maybe it's the look? or weight perhaps? Either way, sounds awesome that your getting it done. post pics. |

Yes! Totally agree. It’s a balancing act between strength, weight, and physical size. And getting the pieces to all fit together in a simple yet elegant way. I’m still exploring ideas, so really just researching materials and thinking about what is possible and what might make the most sense. |

If for pack use I'd probably go for the venom from RSBTR. I have been wanting to try it myself for a while. |

Wow Ben! Thanks for the detailed rundown. |
