hey I'm supposed to head to ten sleep in a couple weeks. I see that it is hot as hell in town. wondering what conditions are like in the canyon? should we reassess our trip plans or is it actually nice there now in the canyon?

As long as you climb in the shade you’re fine.

Reccomend looking at the NWS point forecast provided on MP for the crag itself, rather than the forecast for in town.

I.e. Start here:

https://www.mountainproject.com/area/111852983/mondo-beyondo

Then clicking on the weather icons on that page takes you here:

The amount of thunderstorm activity in that forecast isn't ideal, but the temperatures look fairly reasonable (provided you don't do anything foolish like climbing in the sun). Temperatures at the crag are substantially cooler than in town due to elevation difference.

But if your trip isn't for a few weeks, the current forecast doesn't tell us much. Based on average weather, late August is usually pretty nice for Tensleep. Hopefully the storm activity mellows out by then.

Long story short: no need to change your plans just yet. You'll probably be just fine.

Usually the crags are at least 10 degrees cooler than the town of Ten Sleep. There are crags of varying elevations, so if it’s really hot you can just stay higher in the canyon. Definitely avoid climbing in the sun at all costs though, it can be pretty miserable—thankfully most crags either get morning shade or go into the shade around 2pm. I’ve climbed at FCR and Crag 6 when it’s 105 degrees in town and haven’t had any issues with the heat.

as mentioned, you can always beat the heat going upper canyon. crag 6 can be a great place to camp out as well. sometimes at the ranch during the dog days of summer it stays so hot it is hard to sleep at night

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
