Anyone else dealt with this? I've been having pain in my big toe, moving down towards the ball of the foot. A friend who's a personal trainer suggested it is probably what they call "turf toe," as it started after climbing limit OW with heal-toe cams. I can't toe a hold of any size with the affected foot. I have an appointment to check it out as soon as I could get in (bless the medical system, that's two weeks out). So mostly here looking for commiseration, hopeful stories about recovery time (or realistic ones...), and alternate training ideas. I signed up for a trail race in October so I'm worried about making that, and *out of hope* trying to figure out the best ways to keep that running & climbing conditioning up when I can't run or climb.
I have recurring turf toe (or something similar) in one foot. While aggressive heel-toes hurt when it's acting up, I find that off-vertical face climbing with tiny feet is what triggers it and is the main problem.
Usually after a 1 or 2 weeks of sticking to steeper climber with big feet, and avoiding hiking/running, I can usually return to normal climbing/running.
Thought I had that off and on throughout the years. Turns out mines bunion and would only be "on" with new or too tight of shoes. Back to looser sizing and it's felt ok for a few years now.
One of the worst injuries I ever had was turf toe. It was every bit of 6 months before it went away. Used to wonder how pro football players and athletes paid so much money could be sidelined by something as trivial as turf toe. Freaking awful. I'm still a little in awe as to how it could be done offwidth climbing. Hard to make that toe joint overlap and snap back in a climbing shoe. I don't believe I wore any type of closed toe shoe for a couple weeks. I'm not kidding about this being one of my worst injuries. Good luck
