This isn't about politics. For most people, anyway,

Apparently, to some of the readers, too!  I just read it as a story about mountaineering accidents, but I missed the politics in the story,

Edit: I don't normally read the comments on an article, but I did because it was suggested below. Reminds me of how some Mountain Project threads devolve into ugly, nasty comments. So I just stick to the news articles, for just this reason. Don't think the comments are "enlightening."

Twas a tragic day on the mountain.

Well, perhaps you should go take another look at the comment section there. It's truly enlightening.

Those comments reflect the mindset of a lot of people.  And they lack humanity.

Condolences to those involved in this accident.

Tragic. Anyone have more info on where the accidents took place on the mountain? On the basis of the fall distances I would have to believe somewhere around Red Banks. 1000ft above Helen Lake puts you somewhere around / above the Heart.

I was fortunate enough to get in a couple laps of Shasta before heading off to Alaska this year. Avy Gulch was pretty pedestrian through & through minus some occasional rock fall and then a rime coating above Red Banks. That being said, there weren't a lot of good weather days over my month-long stay. Either you contended with new unconsolidated snow or some nuclear winds around Misery Hill.

Solid ice is "unstable"?  Ok.  Damn, that's a nightmare, getting pulled off the mountain by a falling partner.  I'm assuming they were roped?  Short on details, as usual. Condolences to all concerned.

Comment sections of news articles are podiums for the bottom rung of humanity. Pay no mind to them.

Exactly.

But some people are more interested in the comments than the article. Or more interested in the news organization than the article. Easily distracted, I guess.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
