Moonboard building (Inside vs. Outside vs. Also building Detatched Garage)

Hey all.

I have a moonboard with LEDs. I have a living room that can accomodate it and the wife is okay with it.

BUT that's a lot of room in the middle of our home.

I could potentially put it outside - I'm wondering how people who have had outdoor moonboards feel about this option.

Option three is I build a detatched metal building and use that for a climbing area, but that's up to$10K extra and would have it's own problems (Like whether or not to pay for concrete foundation, what and how much to insulate, etc).

I could make this last option happen but after just buying a new house I'm not super thrilled on another big purchase right away.

Anyways, interested on your thoughts.

(There is no current space other than living rooms that can accomodate the height of the board)

Last option is I have the holds to also just setup the moonboard mini which I could put in a spare bedroom. That would be more space efficient and less in the way but I worry about just not enjoying it nearly as much. Curious if anyone has experience with the mini vs. the 2016/2017/2019 sets

You might have a forth or 3.5 option. The fourth option would be to attach it to the outside of your house. If you have a deck you could easily waterproof the underside of your deck or if you have a steep overhanging roof you could put it under that. I would be pretty reluctant however to put it totally outside in the open, with the rain and wind in North Carolina I could see the wiring for the LEDs getting wrecked. The wood holds would also see the worst humidity shift.

The 3.5 option is to have a shed. You can buy pre fab sheds for $5k but their build quality varies significantly.

The upside to being inside is you will use it the most. I imagine your home has good A/C where as outside it wouldn't be great?

Yeah the home's AC is great and outside NC is pretty eh.

So what I was thinking was if I built an outside I would just use the 2016 set and sell the LEDs/Wood.

If I put it inside I'd use the LEDs/Wood with the 2019 set.

I do have a back deck

Outdoors is rarely the answer. Think of all the times you wouldn't want to climb at your local crag due to weather (rain, heat, humidity, snow, etc). You're going to enjoy climbing on plastic in that weather even less. Even with cover, the rain doesn't fall at a perfect vertical angle, and even if your holds aren't directly hit they will almost certainly seep from the humidity when it rains. The moonboard holds aren't the grippiest to begin with.

If a garage/basement isn't an option, building a climbing wall shed would be my vote. In the house is going to be an eyesore (and get chalk everywhere).

I live in a much milder climate than NC, and I would have much rather put my board inside if that were an option. Even in the relatively dry Bay, it's still drippy and dewy for much of the year.

If you do end up choosing an outdoor build, i recommend orienting the board northeast if you can. That way, you get some morning sun on it to dry up the dew, while maximizing shade for the afternoon. I did due north, and I'm climbing in the afternoon sun between Beltane and Lammas.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
