Seeking PTSD specializing therapist with immediate availability
|
I'm seeking help for my friend who is getting the run-around from therapists (or they're not returning phone calls) and he's really in need of help. Can anyone recommend a therapist who has experience/training in PTSD, a therapist who climbs or knows about climbing would be a plus. Need immediate availability (say, in the next week, May 30-Jun 3). Zoom is fine, but someone in the Boulder/Denver area with in person appts would be somewhat better. I will pay out of pocket, so they need not take ins. If anyone reading this has any recs on where I can look to find a therapist, please feel free to chime in. I'm going to ask some friends IRL and maybe reach out to the climbing grief fund as well. |

You may already know of and have tried these: Find the Best Therapists and Psychologists in Colorado - Psychology Today You can fill in a bunch of fields to narrow things down. Demand seems to be really high right now, and most good therapists have waitlists. Paying out of pocket might increase your chances, though. I'm sorry for whatever happened to your friend, and for the fact that he's getting the run-around. That's super frustrating and I'm sure it feels like adding insult to injury. Hopefully the climbing grief fund has some ideas. Feel free to PM me, too. |

Is the ptsd climbing related? If not i would recommend dropping it as a request/requirement. It is only going ti greatly, greatly reduce the pool of potential candidates. |

I know an excellent therapist based in Boulder. Climbs trad, sport, alpine, works with veterans and PTSD, among other things. She also does equine-assisted therapy, if that's of interest. She's out of town for the weekend, but I'll check to see if she can take a new client soon. |

Google Robin Richardson. Excellent with PTSD, trauma, addiction, abuse issues. She doesn’t climb, but lives in the area, so knows climbing by osmosis. Robin may have a full client list (demand), but you could try her. |

I've had really good luck using Sondermind to find a therapist. It's basically a match service. The patient enters info/ insurance & write up what they're looking for (so be sure to specify PTSD and maybe EMDR if that's of interest) and they will match the patient according to needs and insurance. Some people mostly do online but your friend might be able to request in-person appointments as well. If your friend is open to online appointments, it might expand the options to find a climber since he won't be geographically tied! I got contacted by people and had an appointment within a week of signing up for Sondermind, because they're only matching you with people who have availability. Not sure how it works, but there is no extra cost to the patient to use it. |

Don’t worry about finding a climbing related therapist. I’ve seen a few who barley know what climbing is without any hesitation and it’s been hugely beneficial. Therapists deal with all sorts of terrible trauma, the principles of trauma treatment are the same. Our trauma as climbers is nothing special. Also, look into EMDR as it’s excellent for PTSD with lots of research to back it up. |
