I was wondering if there is any 3rd/4th class scrambling in Smith Rock? I tried looking some stuff up online but couldn't really find anything.

Asgard pass is 4th class, but short. The descent into the lower gorge is also. If you just want to play on some rocks you can scramble a bunch at the northern point area. Not sure what you are looking to do exactly. If you are creative there could be a lot of opportunities.

Nate, thanks for the quick response. I am trying to take a few friends out there who aren't rock climbers and just want to get them comfortable moving through the rocks without having to put them in scary positions.

Seems reasonable. Probably check out the northern point area. Here’s part of it from the top of a route.

Thanks for the help! I did a fair bit of scrambling in the Calico Basin at Red Rock Canyon so that is kinda my frame of reference. So realistically probably upper third class stuff.

I'd be pretty wary about 3rd/4th class at Smith that's either exposed or less traveled. It's not exactly granite. I would not go launching up long exposed features that you may end up having to go right back down. That said, I'd go explore the Marsupials. There are lots of large boulders with easy downclimbs your folks can climb around on and get a feel for scrambling on.

I'll second the marsupials. There's some good scrambling out there that yields fantastic position and views. It's easy to scale up and down to varying comfort levels and easy to bail if uncomfortable out there.

Thank you for the tips about Marsupials! How about Asterisk Pass? I saw it on the map on Smith Rock and it says "Rock Scramble". Sorry, I meant to reply yesterday but apparently you are limited to three responses a day on a single post.

Asterisk pass is a very short, I'll say it, lower 5th class passage to the back side of the park. It's fun to go over, but is mainly used as a climbers shortcut. It could give non-climbers some pause if they're not certain of their footing. If you're exploring the park, I'd recommend eyeing it up as a possible route, but it's not worth the visit in and of itself.
