Ehhhh…I was really stuck-on-the-couch depressed three years ago when my brother in law showed me Free Solo and Valley Uprising back to back. I was in awe, and immediately got a membership to the climbing gym down the block from my shitty apartment. Changed my life for the better. Point is that I’m one of those Honnold bandwagoners now clogging up all the classic routes, so I’m all for anyone discovering a passion for this sport through whomever your hero happens to be. Just don’t be stupid or learn from your stupidity or yer…gonna…die? And maybe reevaluate some things if your hero is Kate Upton. |

The point of me posting this was not to incite hetero daydreaming, but rather to poke good-natured fun at Outside+. To paraphrase the legendary Kyle Walker: "they're like the Road Bike Action Magazine of rock climbing." St. Watterson said it best: To be clear, I'm a big fan of anything written by CW that gets published in Climbing. Even a broken clock can purchase good content twice a day, apparently. That dude is a real climber and an honest-to-goodness nice person who writes good prose and challenges my stereotype of Boulder climbers ;-) Big fan. That's pretty much the only time I enjoy reading something in an Outside+ publication, however. |

No, they won't. |

Jake Jones wrote: Maybe they'll convince people to go plastic climbing. Regardless, a better header for the article would've been "These Photos of Kate Upton Will Perpetuate Western Media's Obsession with Unattainable, Heavily-Photoshopped Normative Standards of 'Beauty' At the Expense of the Quality of Life of Real Women Who Actually Have to Work and Raise a Family Under the Ubiquitous Haranguing of Soulless Madison Avenue Execs Who Tell Them That Their Intrinsic Value is Inversely Proportional to their BMI." |

I don’t really get the joke either Fritz. I remember when Shape first began publishing. It was a Weider publication, a companion mag to Muscle and Fitness, aimed at women who wanted to train for aesthetic look, health/fitness, strength etc but not necessarily for body building. You can learn more about the history if this magazine, which was one of the first mags to promote and idea of women being strong and having firm musculature, in the excellent documentary “Bigger”. I see no need to tear down any woman, for who they are or what they do. I don’t really know anything about Kate Upton, but good for her, for her success. Comparing her to a “real” woman with job and kids is ridiculous. We are all real women. It’s a big complicated world. There’s a big range of realitys. |
