My buddy and I are going to the valley for the first time for a few weeks in November, and I'm trying to see what we need to do camp there, ideally at camp 4. It seems like all the sites are already reserved for the entire month so are we just SOL on trying to sleep in the park? Or are there some first come first serve sites? Also we're planning on climbing el cap so any input on the big wall permit system is welcome as well.
I am always able to get campsites in Upper/North/Lower Pines campgrounds a few days before the weekend I want by snagging any cancellations that open up. The last day to get a refund on a cancellation is the Wednesday before the given weekend, so lots of people are cancelling on Sunday-Wednesday. I recruit as many people as I can to help check throughout those days and I usually just keep the browser tabs open on my computer and refresh them whenever I can. If you're there for more than a weekend, then using this method might not work.
Pretty sure Camp 4 will be on a first come first served basis by November otherwise it's on a lottery which opens the day prior to your intended arrival but the beta on checking for cancelations is likely your best bet.

The Camp 4 lottery is only for the summer tourist season. May 20 to Sept 30. For October/November Camp 4 will be back to first come first served. No reservations needed/allowed. Show up early on a weekday morning to get a site, then can stay up to 30 days. This method should be pretty reliable for November.
I'd vote against the method Brooks describes. This can work to get a couple days, such as for a last minute weekend trip if you live nearby. But I wouldn't rely on it for a week+ trip from far away.
In summary: Show up on a weekday and get a Camp 4 spot.
