Touring skin repair

Hi, few days ago on big summit day I ripped the tip that holds touring skin on the ski. I fixed it with duck tape and tension straps but now I would like to make a permanent repair. Any ideas?

I originally went to a seamstress and hoped he would sew the plastic part (on the photo it is just above the tear, it also has adhesive on it self), but unfortunately not. Now I’m thinking about drinking a few holes in the plastic piece and than sew it together. What do you thinkg about that?

Is the skin long enough to cut the tip off at the tear and install a black diamond tip loop?

Get a piece of heavy canvas that is the width of the skin and take to a cobbler. Have them stitch it to the skin. You can then apply glue to the canvas.

That’s what you get for calling him a seamstress.

He/ him/seamster

+1 Canvas sewn, then glue on that.

Use a speedy stitcher if you can’t find a cobbler.

this BD ultralight tip loop is longer than your original tip loop, so even if you have to cut a little bit of the length of the skin off, it will very likely still fit the ski. It's a pretty quick project.

good job having duct tape with you! life saver!

Do you have an adjustable tail strap? If so, you could cut off the old tip where it's ripped and install a replacement tip, then lengthen your tail strap to compensate. You can get all kinds of replacement tip kits from https://skimo.co/skin-parts or https://cripplecreekbc.com/collections/skins. It doesn't have to be a BD tip so long as it's the right width for your skis and skins. I'd suggest one that's wider than the BD Ultralite tip that Brian McFadden linked to – with that model you'd have to taper the front of your skins, which could allow snow to get between the skins and the ski base. Here's a different BD one that might work:

Thanks all,

I have an adjustable tail, but I am afraid that if I cut the piece off and replace it with other one that than the skin might not fit the ski.

I think I am going to try to do the cobbler work my self. (I went to cobbler but he refused to do it). And if that doesn’t work, than I buy the BD piece (I tried to find it already but it is not that common part in Czech Republic

I have added fabric to lengthen skins

Works fine

Okay, so I just finished the sewing. I made a lot of short sews that should hold it together and a few of longer just to lower the tension on the fabric of the skin. I also made a few knots in between in case that the thread rips. In the end I put small drop of superglue all over it. Now it looks fine, but only time will show how it will hold.

Thank you all of tips :)

Look good, hopefully it holds up. Your longer stitches (aka over stitching) are going to be just as important as the initial stitching for the reasons you noted.

Just cut the skin and add a new loop. If your skin is too short you can always shave a few CM of either end of your skis.

Nice job on the repair.

These appear to be Kohla skins rebranded by Armada. I have some Kohlas that have torn twice now in that same exact way. The first time was on my second day ever using them. The material is thin and the tip attachment seems to be a weak point. I warrantied them and now the warranty skin has torn. It's not the end of the world... I will repair them somehow, and now have 4 mostly working skins for the price of a pair.

I wish the glue was stickier too.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
