Thought others might find this inspiring and informative -- I sure did. Getting to be that time of year, too. For those of us who like to geek out on these sorts of things, Sam Hennessey wrote a piece on WildSnow about his and Michael Gardner's gear choices and strategies on their ski alpinism outings. If you aren't familiar with these guys and what they've been doing, here's some fun background reading: WS's editor cajoled Sam into writing an earlier post about last season's trip, and Alpinist got Gardner to write a post and then an article in Alpinist #77. Mind-blowing stuff, and great reads. I'm a lousy skier but still aspire to climb up and ski down far lesser things, and am basically a huge fan of these guys. I find it super inspiring.
Can't be emphasized enough that these guys are operating at the highest level of skill and experience, and have been for years, despite being pretty under-the-radar (Sam's tone in the article is so low-key that one could miss this; neither sprays, they're practically absent on social media though Gardner posts occasional skateboarding videos on his IG...). Anyhow, just a worthwhile warning that, duh, gear cannot substitute for skill and experience.
That said, since skiing down is a helluva lot more fun than walking or rapping, and since we can adjust these things to our own skill sets, it's cool to see the gear they use and some of their strategies. There's another post in the Mountaineering forum that overlaps with this, but since that one is specific to a particular route I figured I'd post this separately for those interested.
