Petzl Shunt Obsolete?
|
After watching Dave McLeod's video on YouTube (that he has recently removed) a year or two ago on top rope soloing with a Petzl Shunt on a quick link (mallion), I bought one and ran laps with it as my primary fall arresting device with no issue. However after finding out about the top rope solo accident involving a Petzl Shunt without a backup (in Colorado?) a few months past, I have grown wary of using it as my primary top rope solo device. Currently, the Shunt sits on my shelf unused for its real intended purpose -- as a bulky and heavy substitute for a prussik, in use as a third hand My question: Do you all have other uses for it that warrant carrying a Shunt on your rack? Or is the Shunt a relic of a bygone era, obsolete now that lighter and safer alternatives are available? |

In TRS it went from tried and true to paperweight after that and yann camus video replicating it. Safer options exist for self belay. Ymmv Ygd |

In situations where you want a controlled lower; cleaning a new route, or say, in a working environment, they work pretty well |

I still use my shunt while top rope soloing. I have it as my secondary device. I understand the failure that happened during the accident but I feel as though it is a safe option for my system. I don’t know though I’m kinda an idiot. |
