Hi all, coming to CA, from Australia, this December with the family. My wife and I climb religiously. So spending around 2 weeks in Joshua Tree to boulder. Wondering where would be the best location to climb and which town to stay in?  Having 2 kids with us in Winter will mean we will stay in a travel lodge, or similar. Need problems between v5-v10 and kid friendly bases and walk ins. Also which is the best guide book?

The town of Yucca Valley is going to be the best scene for kids.  Get your hotel there. Lots of dining choices.  Google Maps will help you find everything.

Nomad Adventures will have all the guides and gear. An excellent establishment.

I don't boulder. Except for Gunsmoke Traverse.  That one will blow your arms out at every ability level.  Fun too.

Once your arms are blown out get out and hike the trails: Ryan Mountain, Desert Queen Mine, Wonderland of Rocks, Boy Scout Trail, or just take off in any direction that looks interesting.

December as in 9 months from now?

Get the Joshua Tree Bouldering guide. Most approaches to the major areas are flat and 1/2 mile or less.

Many have good landings, though many of the classics are tall. There's quality, hard lines at every area. And many difficult lines that check in well below V5.

Bring your head game, tough skin, and homage to the stonemasters and you'll have a ball.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
