I've been attending the BMFF World Tour for years--first in NYC, more recently in CO. Held in usually smallish, local theaters, the event was always a crazy sold-out scene, with lines wrapping around the block and everyone on a mission to get in and grab a good seat the minute the doors opened. COVID hit and the tour went virtual, (and virtual is still an option this year) but the live events are back as well.
Last night was the first night of the Boulder fest, and I got there early to get a good seat. I needn't have bothered. There was no one in line, no mad rush at the door. By the time the movies started, the theater was barely half full. Balcony = EMPTY.
So I'm wondering why this is? Are people still staying home and away from crowds thanks to the pandemic? (Masks were required at the theater when not eating or drinking) Are folks choosing to watch the movies in the comfort of their homes? Or is it that tickets to the live event costs upwards of $30 depending on the venue and whether AXS or Ticketmaster is assessing the service charge?
Any BanffFF fans here to chime in?
[Edited to add: The entertainment value didn't change; the films were still the same high-quality offerings with the usual climbing/skiing/action-adventure/culture/environment focus.)
