Child Rapist climbing Coach

There's a thread already started |

That’s terrible :/ and that is definitely another stain to this community. Though true justice can’t be served should the charges be true, I hope one day everyone involved can regain some semblance of normalcy in their lives again To answer your question. People who have the normal amount of brain cells probably care about both. Maybe imagine being a brown person, taking your friends out for the first time, and they see “The Negropolis, the collection of brown formations with routes called ‘B is for beers’ and ‘girls in our midsts’” Not the best impression for the climbing “community” Already getting racist and predatory vibes… |

Despicable. (No relation) |

The first part of your post was fine. Pivoting to leverage a girl’s rape to push your political views about renaming routes? Not so much. |
|
I mostly started the other thread so local parents would engage in possible difficult conversations with their children, it wasn’t so much to discuss the alleged child rape. I think so far the lack of messaging from vertical world is extremely disappointing. If the gym hasn’t been actively trying to help possible victims I think people should cancel their memberships. I have known about this story for a year…and so far haven’t heard of anyone receiving communication from vertical world. I do think there are a lot of missing details that should impact how we process and communicate about this alleged crime being committed. But at this time it is far more important to find possible victims and get them help. |
|
I suggest the OP delete this thread in favor of the other one. |
|
Your post is just fine, A drew. "You can't please all the people all the time." |
|
1. I'm not deleting this thread. 2. I'm allowed to make comparisons about topics that people post about (just as others are). 3. Outrage over route names was a months long thread on MP. I find it interesting what people choose to be angry/passionate about, and how much traction those topics receive. 4. Yes, it was a rhetorical question. |

A drew wrote: Sexual predators are universally hated. When it comes to route names, there are naturally going to be a quite a few different viewpoints. That might explain the disparity in traction. |

A drew wrote: The reason you’re getting some blowback is that while everyone is in agreement with your surface sentiment, you highlighted some underlying incongruities in your philosophy with your qualifying statement. It’s not just about opening eyes….ears should be included as well. Victims of such crimes have been telling us for years that a pervasive and unwelcoming misogynistic (or racist) undertone -regardless if consciously unintentional - is like a subconscious white noise (no pun intended) that contributes to a day to day “not seeing” or blurring to what is actually happening. The very thing you don’t want. When we roll our eyes and dismiss the “minor” concerns, it rings a bit hollow to jump to their defense later. I believe your outrage is sincere. It’s just that I’m sure the victims would just as soon you advocate for them before the violence happens, not just after the fact. It’s not either/or, It’s both. |

A drew wrote: These two things are not relatable and therefore are considered in different planes of thought. |

Do you really believe time catching rapists was sacrificed so people could spend time commenting on route names? The outcome of this awful event would have been no different if the route name thread never existed. I don’t have a strong stance on this it’s just that your logic makes no sense at all. |

Jake wander wrote: OK, but is the conclusion that drew is just dumb? There's a theory out there that, for folks of a certain persuasion, moral transgression and tradition transgression elicit similar feelings. I'm not saying that theory is an accurate understanding of such folk's world views, but it would make more sense of the seemingly random connection here, no? I guess the point I'm trying to make is sure, drew's post seems dumb. And when someone says something dumb, I also have the natural reaction to say "shame on you." But I don't learn anything about where drew, and folks like him, are coming from when I do that. |

abandon moderation wrote: I dunno, sounds like you already learned your cousin isn't talking about politics when they're talking about "politics." That already tells you a lot about what is worth responding to and what isn't, not to mention how it informs ideas about "the wisdom of the masses." I've wasted time in my life on account of not knowing what you know. Folks in this very thread have attempted to talk to drew about route name changes instead of "route name changes." |

A drew wrote: Am I missing something here? Drew's not trying to make some equivalency between route names and sexual predation. I read it like this: Why do we sit around navel gazing about offensive route names when... Also, It's just weird to view this as a stain on the climbing community (whatever that is). This POS could have been coaching girls softball or teaching gymnastics. He's a stain on human kind, not on whatever particular group he found himself in. |
