I've had this unpredictable pain in my ring finger joint, the one closest to the nail. It happens more often when I'm *not* climbing than when I am. I finally made an appointment with an ortho hand specialist and diagnosis is a bone spur. The doc basically said stay off crimps, train a more open-handed position (my hands naturally go to a full but not closed crimp position on most holds), don't climb as hard/as often, and it'll just get worse if I keep doing what I'm doing. He said if it gets worse, we'd do steroid injections.
I've scoured the internet since getting home and am coming up empty regarding bone spurs in climber fingers and what others have experienced or done. I'm curious if there's anyone else dealing with this and might share. Obviously I'm not thrilled with the idea of being relegated to moderates for the rest of my life...
I had a bone spur at the base of my thumb from trauma. Quit doing things that aggravated it and it went away within weeks. Heel spurs diminished too, but took years.
