Oaxaca/ Puerto Escondido beta
|
Looks like this hasn't been asked in a while, but does anyone have beta on climbing in Oaxaca City or in Puerto/Zipo area? I've been there a few times before I was a climber and I remember there being sea cliffs and boulders, and according to the Mountain Project post on Puerto there are some sketchy old bolted routes. Is it worth being a rack and a rope? are there enough cracks that I could safely climb in the area? Are there climbers around the area I could meet up with? |

Yes there is climbing near Oaxaca city. Not sure much about the coast, but we did some bouldering around Port Escondido. There are some Mexico climbing guide books(north and south) that came out a few years ago. I have a copy of both if you would like to borrow for your trip. I see that you are in Port McNeill, I live Qualicum Beach. PM me if you want to meet up. I don’t believe there is much gear climbing more sport/boulder. |

There seem to be someday trips out of Oaxaca running: https://coyoteaventuras.com/project/the-rock-climbing-experience/ https://oaxacavertical.wordpress.com/tours/ If you end up making this trip, I'd like to know what you find. I had been toying with the idea of making a trip to this area until the Covid shit hit the fan. |

I just want to chime in on how awesome Oaxaca is. This bakery: https://www.facebook.com/Boulenc.oax/ has the best damn croissant I have ever tasted. Buy Mezcal from the people on the side of the road, it is better than anything you will find with a label in the store. I think the climbing is more located north in Veracruz, but I did not do much looking into that as we were headed to the south coast (which was kind of boring/generic btw). |

The best climbing in Oaxaca is at Santiago Apoala, a 2 hour trip north. The main crag is Peña Colorada but more has been done. I like my multipitch route, Ojo de la Tormenta 5.11c/d. There's plenty more. In town is La Meca and San Sebastián. Short and mostly hard stuff. |

Chiming in, I live in Puerto Vallarta and am always down for an adventure. I have a rack and rope here for anyone who is interested in exploring. There are some cliffs here that are definitely worth looking at. |
