We’re looking for cheap crash pad ideas for a home gym and leaning toward a foam queen size mattress without springs around 8” thick. Able to find one for under $250 shipped, but those will lack a nylon cover. Found some gymnastic like pads that are 8” thick and are 4’x8’ for $625 each shipped. Anyone have any better, cheaper ideas that don’t include finding a used roadside mattress. We’re located in Washington state if anyone has pads like this they are trying to sell. Thanks in advance and happy climbing to all!

The cave in our university has some simple foam pads just around the 8 inch range. Those have been wrapped in tarps, they dont have to go completely around the pad, as long as the flaps on the bottom are tied together on the underside.

The tarps should be the thick hardware store ones. They sell lighter ones that are real cheap, but those arent that flexible and they rip real easy. The thick ones are the same type material that the gymnastic mat covers are made from.

How tall is your wall? If its a normal home wall, then the foam mat with a cover would most likely be fine.

There is often free foam of all sorts on Craigslist. I once found a furniture manufacturer in Puyallup that had a literal mountain of 4" cutoffs 14" by 10 feet. I just checked that address though, and it is now a produce distributor. But CL is a good source.

We found super cheap used mattresses online, and then put them in these transport bags, so we didn’t feel dirty every time we landed on the mattress. We’ve had our wall a year, and the bags have held up.

Thanks for the ideas. Our was is just shy of 12’ tall, so it is likely that a good springless mattress will protect most falls. Thanks for the link C Archibolt! The nylon mattress bags look like an ideal option.

the mattress thing is ok but adding layers on top with another cheap mattress or crash pads is better. Walmart has some cheap foam mattresses in stock usually

You can do both. We found the Mattress covers roomy enough for foam on top. We also added a rug to one of them to make it firmer.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
