black diamond pilot and edelrid hms bulletproof

Can they be used together or does the Pilot require the gridlock screwgate?

The pilot does not require the gridlock. I use the magnetron and it’s very good with most ropes.

I tried it with a bulletproof locker and it was not a great pair. It will depend on the rope you are using but I recommend against that particular pairing. The steel insert is very slick and basically defeats the geometry that the pilot is designed for.

If you're trying to avoid the aluminum on rope? The first draw, and top rope anchors are a great place to use the bulletproof carabiners on the rope end. Yeah, that's two or three carabiners, but they'll last a long time. Or, just steel, if you're okay with that.

I've used the pilot with a bulletproof locker for a couple of years now. No problems, works great.

The combination works just fine.  I wouldn’t necessarily say the geometry of of the Edelrid HMS bulletproof is ideal, but it works with the ATC Pilot.  

However, I would instead recommend a more symmetrical HMS carabiner (HMS Bruce and/or Strike FG) over the Bulletproof.  HMS Bruce, when weight is not an issue.  HMS Strike FG, when weight is an issue.  I would not recommend any Black Diamond belay carabiners, except perhaps the Pearlock.
