I have a wedding I’m attending in Normandy in August, and thinking of extending my trip for an extra week to get some climbing in. Where isn’t miserably hot at that time of year? Happy to go to southern France, Spain, Greece, etc.

Thanks!

Seems to be a disconnect in the thinking here!

There's a few spots climbeable in August then but the rest of the Euros go in the other direction! There's esoteric climbing in Normandy anyway, enough to excite one for a week for sure or move over to the border. Or up to the UK, Sweden etc.

Gotcha, didn’t know if there was good north facing at elevation or something. Do you mind giving some names of spots in those areas people flock to? Looking for places that are popular as I won’t have a traveling partner with me

You are talking about a huge area with a vast amount of climbing, so it would be good to at least narrow down the type of climbing that you are looking for—bouldering, sport, trad, multi-pitch, alpine ( yes, the Alps themselves are in Europe and most of the climbing there occurs during the summer months).

However, I’m not sure how many areas in Europe are good places to show up without a partner. If you are interested in Alpine. Chamonix is a good place to meet a partner, and there is cragging in that vicinity as well. For trad climbing, Llanberis, North Wales has an active scene and is probably a good place to meet up with folks. In southern France, Ceuse is fairly high and popular in summer, so I’m sure that you can meet potential partners in the campground at the base of the approach, especially if you are interested in hard sport routes.

One area I climbed during the summer is the Pfalz, in the German Rhineland, not too far from the French border—numerous sandstone towers in beautiful countryside. There is a campground there, Barrenbrunerhof, I think, that might be a place to meet someone to climb with. I’m sure there are other such places, but it will take some ‘digging’ to learn about them.

Sorry I realize now I totally forgot to say I mostly climb sport. I do some trad but looking for sport crags. I was expecting to search for partners via mountain project and Facebook and whatnot before hand

Without a partner and for sport climbing in august I would head to the municipal camping ground of la-palud-sur-verdon.
Arrive there around 7pm the day before, with 2 packs of (fresh) beers and you should have a group to climb with for the rest of your stay.

Céüse, Gap, Briançon area.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
