Visiting Phoenix - where to boulder?

Hi! I'll be in Phoenix for a while visiting family, and I'm hoping to boulder outdoors a few times a week instead of getting a gym pass. Any recommendations on where to go for good solo bouldering nearby/where to rent a crashpad? Would be interested in anything up to, say, v8 with good landings.

Thanks!

Hi Michelle,

You really have three areas for bouldering. All of them are granite of varying quality. Depending on how long you are going to be down there I just started winter break for school and will most likely make it down there at some point. Me and my friends can show you around as sometimes it's hard to navigate these boulders and now exactly where to park, and how to get to specific ones. Either way trying to meet up with some local climbers will make it much easier to find them.

To the South of Phoenix metro area you have South Mountain https://www.mountainproject.com/area/106154495/south-mountain, you have everything from V0-V8. The bouldering is split up into 2 areas, South and the Equestrian area. The Southern areas are easier to get to but have less parking. The equestrian area has lots of parking but you have to take a bit of a walk with weird conversations about "what's that on your back?" just say you are going to a place for Yoga.

In the center of Phoenix you have the Beardsley Boulders, probably most well documented of them. https://www.mountainproject.com/area/119455323/beardsley-bouldering , you'll have mostly have things in the V2-3 with some harder V6 and V8

and to the North you have Icecapades. However you will need a state trust permit to enter, costs probably 15-20$ for a year. https://www.mountainproject.com/area/105952543/icecapades, only climber here once found it to be mostly crumbly and hard to navigate with mostly easier climbs.

Also the oak flats campground area in superior has some great bouldering as well.  About 1 to 1.5 hours from Phoenix area.

Thank you both! Very helpful. I'll definitely be checking out those areas.
