Hoping to go this July for the full month with my lady. Looking for suggestions on places to stay and if a rental car is necessary. Not opposed to camping, but would prefer a simple room with a kitchenette. Not a dirt bag budget, but not a daddy war-bucks budget either. If we need a break from the hike or climbing, any suggestions for nearby crags is welcome or suggestions about combinations with another major area for a week or two within driving distance. Thanks!

I am going to bump this. I’m a little curious why you picked July? We are considering early June or late August do to hot temps and the sun aspect as described in the book.

I agree with the time frame concerns. I was there in early May and it was quite warm then. I can't help on the lodging questions. There are numerous other good climbing areas not too far, The principle one is Orpierre, an extensive and worthwhile area about an hour (probably less, it's been a while) from Ceuse, with a short approach (we were based there and made a couple of day trips to Ceuse). There is a 'drive-up' crag right in the city of Sisteron, which is close as well, and also worth a visit on a rest day, as well as several others not far outside the city. Another crag we visited in the area was Sigottier, though that was far more limited. A bit further away, but within easy driving distance for a weeks visit, are the areas around Buis-des-Baronnais to the northwest, or the many crags of Provence to the southeast of Ceuse. These is far more than enough great climbing in that general area to keep you busy for many visits (probably multiple lifetimes!!!).

As teachers, June and July are the times we have. As of now, we have plans for June, though I suppose we could try and change them. I've been told by several people that July is fine for Ceuse, the sun is higher in the sky allowing for longer periods of shade on certain walls, days are longer so you can stay longer into the evenings, but it sounds like no...?

I have no personal experience, but from doing some research, it sounds like late spring to late summer is good for the sun aspect, but July is very hot, even in the shade. Late spring is dry and ideal, while late summer is usually crowded and getting close to the rainy season. We were at the Verdon in September of 2012, and had a fair bit of rain.

One thing about Orpierre as an 'off day' location is that the main part of the crag is an amphitheater, so good options for shade for mornings and afternoons. Some of the Buis de Barronais crags also have a variety of sun/shade options.

Is the Vertical Life guidebook (2018) the one to have?

Thanks for the recommendations Mtn File. If I may, we are looking at early June or late August. Which would be the better choice?
