Moving to SLC. Where should I live?

Moving to Salt Lake in January for superior access and awesome rock/snow/nature.

The best-case scenario would be to live at the mouth of the canyons or as close to it as possible. I'm wondering if it makes that much of a difference to live on the west side of I-15, like Rose Park area or Poplar Grove. Does anyone live there and climb/ski? Is it much of a hassle to get to the canyons? Is my climbing/skiing/social life worse off living on that side vs Mill Creek/Sugarhouse??

Depends on how much money you have to spend really, closer to the rock is more$$$

I heard the rock sucks, there's no more snow (Californians track out Alta before it opens anyway), and the beer is no good.

;-)

I think you'd appreciate being on the east side of I-15.  That being said, I used to live in Ogden and made the commute to SLC rocks *cough I mean choss* on weekends.

Doesn't CA own LCC now? I hear you gotta wake up early the day before for the goods now. Ogden has some fun choss.

Yeah I don’t think the $$ will be an issue, it’s just a lot cheaper on the west side. Probably worth it to spend a few extra dimes for the better access

There is more sunlight and better views of the Wasatch in west valley, you just need to wait for the brown air to blow away to reap those benefits.

I moved from sugar house to Murray. I’m closer to the canyons and it’s cheaper and your stuff won’t get stolen

Not entirely true. Always hide yer stuff in SLC whether you’re in South Salt Lake or Cottonwood Heights.

And don't ever leave stuff in the vehicle. Smash and grabs are now depressingly common, whether it's at climbing area parking in LCC or the parking lot at The Front gym.

Beware of theft in SLC. I went there and my heart was stolen by the mormon church

Thats a good one, top ten even. The only place you definitely dont want to live is Provo. The climbing is good but the town and university is super whacky.

It’s always funny to hear that any area in SLC that is not a “cookie cutter” or predominately white neighborhood is called “ghetto”. West side has some of the best food in all of salt lake, short drive to cottonwoods, and housing at a discount. But if youre looking for a 5 min commute instead of a 20 min drive to the cottonwoods, then check out cottonwood heights (and make sure you put up signs in your lawn saying no to gondola). Otherwise, climbing/skiing to be had (under 1 hr) anywhere you move.

"rocks *cough I mean choss*"

Hah, it's true.  But it's climbable and scenic.   To the OP-  All of the area is generally pretty nice, it's gorgeous and mellow, but most locales are just neighborhoods with parks and grocery stores.  So if you want to be close to the climbing and have a fun surrounding neighborhood, focus on Sugar House.

Hey,

I have an amazing apartment on Capitol Hill if you’re interested. It’s right down town so you’re close to night life and restaurants, it’s near all the city creek trails, and it’s like 2 minutes to I-15. It’s two beds one bath. It’s an up/down duplex but doesn’t feel like a down. Plus you get a yard. Let me know if you’re interested and I’ll send pics. 801-458-9393.

I live on the West Side of I-15, takes 15 minutes to get to BCC, 20 to get to LCC, the crowding density is lower, and the food is great. Wouldn't recommend Poplar Grove or Rose Park, but WVC has some great, super safe neighborhoods.
